Trojans Fall to the Blue Devils, 35-28

Blue Devils quarterback Anthony Jennings scored on a 4-yard run with seven seconds remaining to give Marietta a 35-28 victory at Lassiter on Friday in a critical Region 5-AAAAA.

The win, Marietta’s fourth straight, put the Blue Devils in a position that seemed unthinkable a month ago, when the Blue Devils entered region play 0-4 overall: Their game against undefeated Walton next week will decide the region championship, according to the AJC.

“The kicking game really hurt us,” Lassiter coach Jep Irwin told the Marietta Daily Journal. “I have to do a better job getting us ready for that. I’m really proud of how we came back, but Marietta made a lot of big plays, and they deserved to win. Coach Burton and those guys did a good job, and you have to give them a lot of credit. The blocked kicks really hurt us.”

"Fortunately, we practice this all of the time,” Marietta coach Scott Burton said of his team’s late scoring drive. “We do it all the time, so it was really calm, cool and collected. The ball was batted down on first down, so I knew they were bringing a little pressure. I thought we could slip a screen in there and, hopefully, get a first down. Ro’Mello did a great job, and the offensive line really got on there on the screen. The rest is history.”
