Sprayberry's Newton Top Athlete at Roswell Relays

The Yellow Jackets finish eighth, just ahead of Lassiter's boys.

Michael Newton of Sprayberry was named the top male athlete of the meet. He won the long jump with a leap of 22 feet, ¾ inch, finished third in the 100 meters at 10.98 seconds, and was part of teams that ran second in the 4x100-meter relay and third in the 1,600-meter sprint medley.

PJ Stone, Tye Richardson and Shon Melton were the other members of the 4x100 relay team, and Stone, Melton and DJ Funderberg joined Newton in the sprint medley.

Richardson also won the 110-meter hurdles in 14.84 seconds for the Yellow Jackets.

The competition among the 19 boys teams was extremely close. Host Roswell won with 66.5 points, but with 41 points Sprayberry was only seven points behind third-place North Hall. Lassiter was another seven points back with 34.

Roswell won in more dominating fashion among the girls with 97 points. Lassiter totaled 15, and Sprayberry had 9¼.

The relays, co-sponsored by the Roswell Rotary Club and Roswell High School, date back to the 1950s. This year girls from 21 high schools and boys from 19 high schools competed in 14 events.

Among the top performers for Lassiter’s boys:

  • James Pate was second in the pole vault, clearing 12 feet.
  • Alexander Reese, Kevin Loggins, Jalen Hughes and Ike Willis finished fourth in the 4x100 relay in 44.07 seconds.
  • Reese, Loggins and Willis teamed with Wes Hatfield to place sixth in the 4x400 relay in 3:35.12.
  • Reese, Hatfield, Kyle Moore and Devontae Moore ran sixth in the 1,600-meter sprint medley in 3:54.75.
  • Alex Mattle and Cedric Stadom finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in the shot put.

Among the girls, the top performers included:

  • Lassiter’s Kelsea Ogletree won the shot put with a throw of 37 feet, 6 inches.
  • Maya Marshall of Sprayberry finished third in the 100 meters at 12.87 seconds.
  • Isabella Hess, Julie Gardiner, Corie Gutierrez and Erin Verdeyen ran fifth in the 4x800-meter relay in 10:50.84 for Lassiter.
  • Sprayberry’s Gina Smith was third in the discus with a throw of 99 feet, 1 inch.
