Lassiter Wrestling Top Seed

Region duals championships begin today as wrestling teams eye Macon. Lassiter takes on No. 2 seed Wheeler.

's Trojan wrestlers have captured the top seed in 5AAAAA and are destined to compete next weekend at the Macon Centreplex.

Lassiter earned a first-round bye. The Trojans host the region championship, which begins 9 a.m. Saturday. Wheeler is the No. 2 seed, followed by defending runner-up Cherokee, Etowah, Walton, Marietta and Woodstock.

“Any of the top five teams can win this based on the matchups,” Lassiter coach Steve Day told the Marietta Daily Journal. “Our advantage is that we’re able to go out and watch the other six teams wrestle before we get going, but it’s a negative because they’ll already be ready to go when we start. It’ll be our first match, so anything can happen.”

Each region championship features double-elimination brackets, with the runner-up challenging the third-place team, if necessary.
