Cobb School Signs Sell Advertising Space

The Cobb County School District has discovered a way to make extra cash.

The Cobb school system has changed its rules to allow advertising at county schools.

Businesses can now buy advertising space on such school displays as Lassiter High School's sign which has spots for eight companies and a computerized sign panel.

The venture has netted thousands of dollars for Lassiter, with the money paying for new turf for an athletic field, reports the AJC.

Chris Burns, a managing partner with Impact Local Marketing Group in Forsyth County, helped the Lassiter foundation assemble the marquee and find advertisers. Burns wouldn’t discuss specific pricing, but he said in a good year, with a full rotation of ads, the structure can yield $50,000, according to the AJC.

Pope High School built a sign similar to Lassiter’s, but it doesn't have the same advantage existing on a street with less traffic.

Georgia Natural Gas has agreed to sponsor a sign for Northeast Cobb's Sprayberry High School. The sign will be erected in the coming weeks, and should do well considering 44,000 automobiles travel past each day on Sandy Plains Road.

Schools have allowed advertising on sports fields and in event programs for years, but reach a limited audience. The new concept seeks a wider audience by attracting the eyes of commuters driving past the schools.
