Should Congress Be Denied Paychecks Until It Passes a Budget?

The U.S. House of Representatives approved the "No Budget, No Pay" bill that also extended the nation's debt ceiling for another three months.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed the "No Budget, No Pay Act," which would require Congress to pass a budget to continue getting their own paychecks.

U.S. Rep. Tom Price, a Republican who represents Northeast Cobb, said in a news release Wednesday that passage of H.R. 325 shows the urgency of the nation's financial problems.

“It has been 1,365 days since the U.S. Senate last passed a budget. If families and businesses must adhere to a budget, why shouldn’t the U.S. government? House Republicans have done our job year after year – putting forth a bold, responsible plan to correct the nation’s fiscal course. We will do so again this year with a plan that will come to balance within 10 years," said Price, who is married to Roswell City Councilwoman Betty Price.

“By passing ‘No Budget, No Pay’ today we underscore the utter urgency with which lawmakers should approach America’s compounding fiscal problems," he said.

The measure was added to a bill that extends the debt ceiling for another three months.

Obama threatened the military and those on SS to withhold their money. He said it was the top two on his hit list that will not receive anything if things don't go his way. Last I checked it wasn't the military nor those on SS that got us into the mess it was the politicians. So, YES!, they all should have their pay withheld until they do what they were elected for. ...and that includes any benefits also.

Marlene, you quite obviously did not watch nor listen to any news nor speeches. Ignorance is not bliss, or informed.
Brian Cook January 24, 2013 at 05:17 PM
I strongly support a no pay policy if the budget is not passed. It is insane to pay elected officials public money to do nothing but argue. But also remember if the will of the people is not being acknowledged, then there is a price to pay on election day!!!!
Roy McIntyre January 24, 2013 at 05:19 PM
By not paying them they would only find a way to make the people they represent suffer.

Marlene, what Obama did was warn of the ramifications. That is not the same thing as threatening. Threatening implies an ability to take unilateral action, which he can't do. I heard the speech. Did you listen to the speech, or are you regurgitating what someone else told you? I don't think withholding their pay is enough. If congress can't do their jobs, they should be fined or penalized.

Amen Mark! I have yet to hear of any elected officials offer to take a pay cut or give up pay or benefits in order to help alleviate the budget problem. Almost without exception elected officials came to government from other well paying careers and some even still receive pay from those careers! Historically the founding fathers saw SERVICE to there country as an honor and a duty not as a means for personal profit and gain! Thomas Jefferson is one example who served faithfully yet died on poverty! Not that I am suggesting that but let those in power be the example of sacrifice and service rather than the cause of more unbridled spending and debt! Those of us paying their salary have to live on a budget it's time they got it together stop catering to special interests who wine and dine them and see what it's like for their constituents! YES, by all means let them do without pay until they come to some workable solution or get out and let somebody who can take their place!
