10-and-Under Tennis at Woodbine Station

1. McCleskey Middle School will present a mounted Great Horned Owl to Kennesaw State University President Daniel S. Papp today in a formal presentation ceremony at the school.

In 1988, an unlucky Great Horned Owl suffered a tragic end when it flew into a power line on the McCleskey Middle School campus in Northeast Cobb. A science teacher found the bird and had it mounted, and it remained on display in a Plexiglas case in the school’s media center for the next 23 years. McCleskey is donating the owl to Kennesaw State, whose athletic teams are known as the Owls.

In a ceremony in the media center, members of McCleskey’s orchestra will perform the owl-inspired “Hedwig’s Theme” from the Harry Potter movies before the bird is presented to Papp by the principal; 9:30 a.m. to 9:50 a.m. McCleskey Middle School, 4080 Maybreeze Road.

2. The Cobb Tennis Academy presents 10-and-under tennis at Woodbine Station. You'll find co-ed 8-and-under and 10-and-under QuickStart tennis instruction and matches for $65 for six weeks. A QuickTots class also is offered for $35 for six weeks. You will need to bring the following types of tennis balls: 8-and-under beginner, red felt; 10-and-under beginner and advanced beginner, orange felt. The program runs from 5 to 6 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. Call to register for specific classes. Turn into the Woodbine tennis parking lot at the intersection of  Sandy Plains and Wigley roads.
