How to Stop Your Dog from Jumping

My friend Whinnie jumps when her owner tries to leash her. Cesar Milan, the Dog Whisperer, shows how to stop the jumping.

You say "no!" repeatedly. You push your dog away. But the jumping continues. Why?

According to Cesar Milan, the way you react gives your dog attention and reinforces the bad behavior.

When meeting dogs, Millan instructions dog owners to use the no talk, no touch, no eye contact rule. No attention for the dog until he is in a calm, submissive state. Once that is achieved, give praise and pet him or her as a reward.

The technique works if used by the immediate family, but it's difficult for guests and strangers not to immediately shower the dog with attention because the dog is so happy to see them.

Consistent use is key.

The video demonstrates this technique, and the body block. The body block technique works by taking away space/freedom, according to Milan.

A body block is just that - a block. There is no poking, kneeing, slapping, hitting or beating of the dog. If your dog moves into a forbidden space, you correct him by body blocking and getting him to move back.

In the video, the body block is used to keep the Border Collie from jumping or crowding his owner, but the technique can also be used for keeping dogs from rushing out of doorways.
