Local hunger relief group provides snacks for students at Marietta Title 1 schools 

PORCH-Marietta, an all-volunteer nonprofit dedicated to reducing food insecurity, announces its upcoming fundraiser in partnership with Kendra Scott Jewelry. The event is scheduled for Sunday, May 5 from 3-5PM at Kendra Scott Jewelry at The Avenue East Cobb, in time for Mother’s Day and graduation shopping. 
The store will donate 20% of its proceeds to PORCH-Marietta to support their PORCH for Schools program. Through this initiative, PORCH provides healthy snacks for students in local Title 1 schools so they can stay fueled up and ready to learn all day. Hungry students can’t focus on learning, and teachers shouldn’t have to pay for students’ snacks themselves. 
“Every customer who mentions PORCH on 5/5 will make a positive impact on the lives of local students,” said Liz Platner, chapter leader of PORCH-Marietta. “We had funds to support 9 Cobb County and Marietta City schools in January and we hope to raise enough money to provide for these schools again next semester. Together, we can make a significant difference towards reducing food insecurity in our neighborhood." 
Fair Oaks Elementary teacher Carmen Meek commented, “Most of my students are newcomers to this country. These students have very little when they come, and the parents must work very hard to provide them with the things they need. As a teacher it is a blessing to know that the PORCH organization has been so generous, sending healthy and delicious snacks to my students. My students are learning and growing which can make for a long day at school. Many times they need that extra snack to finish their day. They look forward to receiving the snacks. I know their families appreciate it.”
PORCH Communities was started in 2011 in Chapel Hill, and there are now over 550 neighborhoods in 10 states serving their local communities. PORCH chapters have gathered and distributed more than $12.5 million worth of food to neighbors in need. The PORCH-Marietta chapter was founded in February 2022. 
Contributing non-perishable food to 6 local food pantries on a monthly basis is the flagship program of PORCH-Marietta. To date, PORCH-Marietta has donated over 64,000 pounds of food to these pantries. They collect food via monthly neighborhood food drives, based on customized wish lists from the pantries. Neighbors put the requested groceries out on their porch and volunteers pick it up and deliver it to the pantries. Currently there are 50 Marietta neighborhoods participating. PORCH-Marietta Partners with Kendra Scott Jewelry to Combat Food Insecurity

The Georgia Symphony Orchestra ends its 73rd season with ‘Beethoven’s Universe,’ an awe-inspiring, innovative, multimedia concert experience. Two performances are scheduled to take place May 18-19, 2024, at the&nbsp;Dr. Bobbie Bailey and Family Performance Center in Kennesaw, Ga.


GSO Music Director and Conductor Timothy Verville will lead the orchestra and 100-plus members of the GSO Chorus as they&nbsp;perform Eric Whitacre’s composition, “Deep Field,” live to the film “Deep Field: The Impossible Magnitude of our Universe.”&nbsp;Combining stunning imagery from the Hubble Space Telescope, never-seen-before galaxy fly-bys and custom animations, the&nbsp;film creates an immersive, unforgettable journey from planet Earth to the furthest edges of our universe. Audience members&nbsp;will be encouraged to take a more active role in the piece via a free app on their mobile devices.




This unique musical program also includes Beethoven’s “Symphony No. 9.” This beloved masterpiece, written for orchestra&nbsp;and chorus, celebrates the ideals of joy, freedom and equality, and is often hailed as one of the greatest human achievements&nbsp;in music.


The winners of the GSO’s 2024 Beethoven’s 9th national vocal competition will be the featured soloists: soprano Emma&nbsp;Robertson, mezzo-soprano Tetyana Vaknovska, tenor William Green and bass/baritone Jacob Lay.
