No. 1 Lassiter Upset; Walton Also Falls

Wheeler was routed by Grayson and Kell pulled out a win in the final seconds in first round of the Georgia High School football playoffs Friday.

Lassiter's enjoyment of its first No. 1 state ranking ever was brief, and it will hold some bitter memories. After leading 21-0 in the second quarter, the Trojans could get nothing going offensively in the second half of their Class AAAAAA first round state playoff game. Brookwood rallied late in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime, then kicked a field goal in the extra session to shock previously unbeaten Lassiter 24-21. The Trojans finished one of their best seasons prematurely, with a 10-1 record. But quarterback Eddie Printz and a Lassiter powerful offense were stymied when it mattered the most. In another part of East Cobb, another visiting team from Gwinnett also forced a game into overtime, and with similar results. …

I left the Lassiter/Brookwood game at the end of the 3rd quarter with Lassiter leading 21-6. I commented to a friend as we walked along the fence behind the Lassiter bench about the team laughing and horsing around like they'd already won the game. I'm disappointed in the outcome, but not surprised. Congrats Brookwood.   more ›

Lassiter Foils Milton's Upset Bid

The Trojans remain undefeated after a big rally in the second half; Walton edged Wheeler after trailing by 13 in the fourth quarter.

Friday was a wild night in Region 5-AAAAAA high school football action, and that's putting it mildly. Wheeler had Walton on the ropes in what would have been the upset of the year, at least in games played in Cobb. At the same time in Alpharetta, Milton was rolling out to a big, and surprising, lead against undefeated and second-ranked Lassiter. But as the games wore on, the favorites figured out how to get back in their games, and ultimately win them, in very different ways. Walton got a touchdown run from Tyren Jones and a touchdown pass from Price Wilson to D.J. Smith to erase a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit and nip Wheeler on the road, 24-23. Lassiter quarterback Eddie Printz threw for four touchdowns in the second half and 409 yards…

Walton, Lassiter Scratch Out Wins

Pope and Kell won easily on Friday, while Wheeler and Sprayberry lost Homecoming games.

After three quarters Friday, Lassiter had just 16 points on the scoreboard.  Woodstock's defense had something to do with that, along with a few injuries for the Trojans.  But Lassiter, ranked No. 2 in Class AAAAAA, pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 30-7 in a Region 5AAAAAA game.  Eddie Printz threw for 170 yards and a touchdown, Willie Police scored a touchdown and so did linebacker Patrick Levandoski, on an interception return in the fourth quarter.  The Trojans (5-0, 2-0) can now turn their full attention toward Friday's clash with Walton on Friday. The 6th-ranked Raiders (4-1, 2-0) won their Homecoming game 21-7 over Cherokee, as Tyren Jones ran for 180 yards and scored two touchdowns in another Region 5AAAAAA game.  After the …

Wheeler, Sprayberry Kick Off Season

The longtime East Cobb rivals meet Friday night as high school football gets underway.

After coming close to posting winning seasons in 2011, Wheeler and Sprayberry want to get over hump this year.  Sprayberry reached the first round of the Georgia High School Association state playoffs after posting a 5-5 regular season record, then got clobbered by eventual Class AAAA champion Tucker in the first round. Wheeler was 2-3 in mid-season, then fell to a 4-6 finish when it hit the fat end of the schedule, including lopsided losses to Lassiter and Walton, semifinalists and finalists in Class AAAAA, respectively.  That's still a major improvement for the Wildcats, who had been 1-29 from 2008-2010. The East-Northeast Cobb rivals will meet in a non-region game at Wheeler starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday seeking some positive early …

Lassiter Spoils Wheeler's Homecoming

The Wildcats had hope at halftime trailing only 14-7, but had no answer for the Trojans' offensive power in the third quarter.

By halftime, the Wheeler Wildcats were making a game of their homecoming contest with the Lassiter Trojans.  After Kahlem Looney slipped through the Trojans' defense for a 36-yard touchdown in the second quarter, Lassiter's fragile lead stood at 14-7. But the Trojans dampened Wheeler's homecoming celebrations in the second half, scoring two touchdowns early in the third quarter to pull away for a 35-7 victory in a Region 5-AAAAA game.   Lassiter quarterback Eddie Printz threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns, including two scores to Charlie Hegedus, who had 140 receiving yards.  A rough schedule for the Wildcats (3-5, 1-3) doesn't get any easier next week, when they'll serve as Walton's homecoming opposition. Lassiter (6-1, 2-1), which …

Sprayberry, Lassiter Football Preview

Sprayberry plays Pope tonight, while Lassiter faces Wheeler.

Autumn is definitely in the air, and the high school football season is winding down. Sprayberry High School plays the Pope High School Greyhounds at 7 p.m. It's homecoming for Pope tonight with a rare Thursday celebration.  The game was moved up a day from the original schedule to accommodate a live airing on WSB-TV's high school digital sports channel. It's Channel 248 on Comcast. The game at the Hound Pound will be the renewal of another East Cobb backyard rivalry, with 5-1 Pope looking to keep pace near the top of the Region 5-AAAA North standings. Sprayberry is 3-3. Both teams are 2-1 in region play. The Trojans (5-1) plays Wheeler Thursday evening. The football game will be a challenging one for the Wildcats (3-3).

Lassiter Drops Out; Walton Ranked 6th

The first loss for the Trojans dropped them out of the Top 10.

Walton's win over Lassiter last Friday kept the Raiders at the No. 6 spot in the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Class AAAAA football poll. The same fate was suffered by Pope, which had been ranked No. 9 in the Class AAAA rankings but lost 33-7 to Kell last week.  Walton is off this week, while Lassiter (4-1) will try to rebound against struggling Cherokee (1-5) in Region 5-AAAAA play.  Also in Region 5-AAAAA, Wheeler (3-3) plays host to Etowah (3-3).  In Region 5-AAAA, Pope (4-1) visits North Paulding (3-3), Kell (4-2) entertains Osborne (1-4), and Sprayberry (2-3) is at home against Hiram (3-3). The Walker School (2-3) travels to Bremen (2-3) in a Region 6-A game.
