Lassiter's enjoyment of its first No. 1 state ranking ever was brief, and it will hold some bitter memories. After leading 21-0 in the second quarter, the Trojans could get nothing going offensively in the second half of their Class AAAAAA first round state playoff game. Brookwood rallied late in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime, then kicked a field goal in the extra session to shock previously unbeaten Lassiter 24-21. The Trojans finished one of their best seasons prematurely, with a 10-1 record. But quarterback Eddie Printz and a Lassiter powerful offense were stymied when it mattered the most. In another part of East Cobb, another visiting team from Gwinnett also forced a game into overtime, and with similar results. …

Friday was a wild night in Region 5-AAAAAA high school football action, and that's putting it mildly. Wheeler had Walton on the ropes in what would have been the upset of the year, at least in games played in Cobb. At the same time in Alpharetta, Milton was rolling out to a big, and surprising, lead against undefeated and second-ranked Lassiter. But as the games wore on, the favorites figured out how to get back in their games, and ultimately win them, in very different ways. Walton got a touchdown run from Tyren Jones and a touchdown pass from Price Wilson to D.J. Smith to erase a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit and nip Wheeler on the road, 24-23. Lassiter quarterback Eddie Printz threw for four touchdowns in the second half and 409 yards…

What might have been billed an offensive treat turned into a defensive struggle. The Lassiter Trojans nursed a slight lead in the second half Friday and used their defensive muscle to hold off the Walton Raiders and claim a 21-9 victory. The so-called "East Cobb Super Bowl" featured two high-powered offenses and teams ranked in the Top 10 in Class AAAAAA. But the Trojans forced three turnovers, two of them from defensive back Patrick Levandoski at critical times, to stave off Walton's rally and win their Homecoming game. Levandoski intercepted a pass as Walton was driving deep in the fourth quarter, and also forced a fumble by Raiders running star Tyren Jones that halted another possible touchdown drive with the game on the line. As …

The "East Cobb Super Bowl" will be renewed Friday, but this is about a lot more than a football game.

Of course it's a football game. When two of the Top 10 teams in Class AAAAAA get together, it's a very big football game. As both of their meetings were last year, including the state semifinals. But when Lassiter High School and Walton High School square off in anything, it's more than the "East Cobb Super Bowl" in football terms. In addition to their multi-sport athletic prowess, Walton and Lassiter will be boasting their highly touted marching bands. And both are among the top academic high schools in Cobb County and Georgia. Tonight's game at Lassiter's Frank Fillman Stadium is also Homecoming for the Trojans, with a parade veering down Shallowford Road from the Home Depot on Sandy Plains Road to the school starting at 5:30 p.m…

After three quarters Friday, Lassiter had just 16 points on the scoreboard. Woodstock's defense had something to do with that, along with a few injuries for the Trojans. But Lassiter, ranked No. 2 in Class AAAAAA, pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 30-7 in a Region 5AAAAAA game. Eddie Printz threw for 170 yards and a touchdown, Willie Police scored a touchdown and so did linebacker Patrick Levandoski, on an interception return in the fourth quarter. The Trojans (5-0, 2-0) can now turn their full attention toward Friday's clash with Walton on Friday. The 6th-ranked Raiders (4-1, 2-0) won their Homecoming game 21-7 over Cherokee, as Tyren Jones ran for 180 yards and scored two touchdowns in another Region 5AAAAAA game. After the …

The start of the high school football season is just a week away, and some of Cobb's best teams are priming for an early spotlight. Teams from East and Northeast Cobb such as Walton, Kell and McEachern will all be playing next Saturday in the Corky Kell Classic at the Georgia Dome. Earlier this week, they all learned, not surprisingly, that they're ranked in the Top 10 in preseason polls. Earlier this year, the Georgia High School Association went from five to six classifications for sports, so the designations for most schools have changed. East Cobb's Walton, which reached the Class AAAAA title game and is ranked No. 4 in the Class AAAAAA preseason poll, got a bit of a surprise this week in a scrimmage against Hillgrove of West Cobb…

Online registration has ended; admission at the door is $25 for chamber members and $35 for non-members. Last season was one to remember for high school football in East Cobb. Walton reached the Class AAAAA finals, defeating backyard rival Lassiter in the semifinals. Both teams are expected to be among the best in the state again this fall. Pope and Kell qualified for the …

I left the Lassiter/Brookwood game at the end of the 3rd quarter with Lassiter leading 21-6. I commented to a friend as we walked along the fence behind the Lassiter bench about the team laughing and horsing around like they'd already won the game. I'm disappointed in the outcome, but not surprised. Congrats Brookwood.   more ›
