Last year, many of the basics were on my list of top resolutions for us dog owners: spend more quality time with our dogs, pay more attention to their dental care and diet, improve fitness, tidy up training and so on. This year, I’m thinking a little more outside the box. As I investigated gift ideas for the 2011 gift giving season, I was impressed by the increased availability of environmentally considerate pet products. Among my discoveries were dog toys made of dyed wool from a company called “A Cheerful Pet.” These toys are designed in the U.S.A. and then handcrafted by artisans in Nepal using all natural New Zealand wool. So, with Christmas 2011 now but a memory, it's time to move ahead to the next–and last–big event of this year. There are many Northeast Cobb area parties and options to choose from, all leading up to the "3-2-1 ... HAPPY NEW YEAR!" Do you want to be front-and-center for the 23rd Annual Peach Drop in Atlanta? You'll see legendary rock band Kansas and live bands performing throughout the day. There's plenty of family events, including carnival-style rides, before the 800-pound peach drops. If you're planning to drink on New Year's Eve, check out this app.
A smartphone app provided by the Governor's Office of Highway Safety will give New Year's Eve partygoers a way to find a ride home with just the swipe of a finger. The Drive Sober, Georgia app also will provide users with information about drinking and driving. The app can be downloaded for Android and iPhone, and a simulation is available here. According to a news release from the Cobb County Police Department, the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism last year reported two to three times more people died in alcohol-related vehicle crashes over the winter holidays compared to periods during the rest of the year. Traffic fatalities involving an alcohol-impaired driver averaged 28 percent in December but rose to 40 percent …

Start 2012 right with safety tips and hobby help for your pets.
After an unfortunate incident with Booker and our Nativity, during which St. Joseph developed a chip on his shoulder, didn’t have a leg to stand on, and lost an arm, I safely baby-gated our dogs from the Christmas tree. All those temptations – flickering lights, pretty colored bows, and even the dog-proof ornaments – proved too much a distraction for young Booker. Once he got with the routine, though, he became very reliable around the “leave-its,” helped in part by the appearance of a spray bottle of Bitter Apple in the manger.
