GDOT Issues Inclement Weather Road Advisory

GDOT is urging motorists to monitor weather conditions in advance with the possibility of light snow and icy roadways expected Thursday and Friday in areas of North Georgia.

Weather forecasts for areas of north Georgia and Douglas, Paulding and Cobb counties, and possibly black ice accumulations on roadways as far south as Columbus beginning Thursday afternoon through Friday morning. Due to the expected inclement weather, the Georgia Department of Transportation urges motorists to plan ahead before traveling during this timeframe and check weather and road conditions before heading out. “We are continuously monitoring current weather conditions and forecasts as snow flurries and high winds are predicted for north Georgia," said Keith Golden, Georgia DOT Commissioner. Avoiding Black Ice

Black ice is on the roads after an afternoon of snow flurries.

I was driving on the interstate last night after intermittent snow flurries had been falling through the afternoon and early evening.  The temperature was in the mid 20's and the wind was blowing around 20mph. My eyes fell upon snow hovering a few inches above the ground. The strong winds were making the scattered snow blow in the most interesting and elegant patterns. It was as if the snow was performing a dance just above ground. It was gently gliding one way and then another in beautiful swirling patterns. It made me think of the symphony I listened to earlier in the afternoon. A few minutes later, while driving up highway 575, my car suddenly slid across a sheet of black ice.
