Brookwood at Lassiter, Friday, 7:30 p.m. For the first time in school history, the Trojans are ranked No. 1 in the state, in the Class AAAAAA poll. But like Walton's game against Parkview, another Gwinnett team with a strong playoff track record is coming to Cobb. Lassiter is 10-0 with its high-powered offense, led by quarterback Eddie Printz and receiver Willie Police, and an opportunistic defense that has come up big when needed (including its regular season win over Walton). Three years ago, the Trojans were also undefeated, then were knocked out in the first round of the playoffs. Southwest DeKalb at Kell, Friday, 7:30 p.m. The Longhorns have had another strong season, and enter the Class AAAAA playoffs ranked No. 4. Their only loss …

Monday, October 1, 2012
SPLOST and other education topics are up for discussion at a meeting at Wheeler High School.
For the second time in less than a month, Cobb Board of Education chairman Scott Sweeney has scheduled a town hall meeting in his East Cobb district. The next town hall will take place next Monday, Oct. 8, at Wheeler High School. Sweeney said at Thursday's school board meeting that citizens may ask questions on any school-related topic, but expects the builk of the discussion to cover the proposed Cobb schools SPLOST IV project list. Last week, Sweeney heard from Walton High School parents, who asked for more than the $9 million earmarked in SPLOST IV for gymnasium and theater improvements. Some wanted a new fine arts facility to replace cramped and outmoded space for the Walton orchestra, band, drama and other arts programs. Those …

Lassiter’s upset loss to Wheeler last week has upset the Trojans’ hopes for an unofficial national soccer championship. The Lassiter boys are ranked eighth in the latest ESPNHS Powerade Fab 50 national rankings after being No. 1 since the start of the season. The Trojans fell to 11-1 on the season with their shootout loss at Wheeler, which scored the tying goal with 2:19 left in the second half to send the game into overtime Friday night, The Marietta Daily Journal said. After two scoreless overtime periods, it was still a 1-1 game, and for the Region 5-AAAAA standings, the teams went to a penalty-kick shootout at Corky Kell Stadium. The Wildcats made all five kicks, but the Trojans’ Shaban Abousaud, who scored the first goal of the game …

Wheeler High School juniors Joshua Denning and Evan Wallace of East Cobb have entered a pretrial diversion program after being arrested in November and charged with three counts of use and possession of a destructive device. If completed successfully, they will have their records expunged or destroyed. Region duals championships begin today as wrestling teams eye Macon. Lassiter takes on No. 2 seed Wheeler.
Lassiter High School's Trojan wrestlers have captured the top seed in 5AAAAA and are destined to compete next weekend at the Macon Centreplex. Lassiter earned a first-round bye. The Trojans host the region championship, which begins 9 a.m. Saturday. Wheeler is the No. 2 seed, followed by defending runner-up Cherokee, Etowah, Walton, Marietta and Woodstock. “Any of the top five teams can win this based on the matchups,” Lassiter coach Steve Day told the Marietta Daily Journal. “Our advantage is that we’re able to go out and watch the other six teams wrestle before we get going, but it’s a negative because they’ll already be ready to go when we start. It’ll be our first match, so anything can happen.” Each region championship features double…
