Season ends for Lady Jackets
If defense wins championships, then the GHSA might want to give the state championship trophy to Creekview right now. The Lady Grizzly stingy defense forced 29 turnovers Friday as Creekview cruised to a 59-25 win over No. 4 seed Sprayberry in the first round of the AAAA state playoffs. The victory represented the first tournament win in school history for the Creekview girls. For Creekview coach Roger Nolan, the game plan was simple: stop Sprayberry star Nadia Ogene. "Stopping Nadia Ogene was the key," Nolan said after the game. "I knew if Madison Rice was able to put ball pressure on [Ogene] without getting into foul trouble, we would be all right." Rice's defense was impenetrable most of the night. The junior recorded eight steals and …

Lady Jackets defeat Kell in Region 5-AAAA playoffs, advance to play Douglas County.
Basketball can be a frustrating game. For 47 minutes in Tuesday’s Region 5-AAAA playoff game at Douglas County High School the Sprayberry Lady Jackets and their head coach Mark Giles were extremely frustrated. “We just couldn’t make any shots, neither team could,” said Giles. The Kell Lady Longhorns held Sprayberry to 15 points through the first three quarters, including a two-point third quarter. With only eight minutes left to play Kell had a 20-25 lead and seemingly a ticket to the state playoffs. But frustration can go both ways. The Lady Longhorns built their biggest lead of seven points with less than a minute to go in the game. Spirited play by sophomore Naomi Stuger led Kell as she finished with 13 points and 10 rebounds. …

Yellow Jackets get 15 points from D.J. Funderburg to topple Greyhounds in 5-AAAA battle.
The Sprayberry Yellow Jackets boys basketball team topped the Pope Greyhounds 67-58 on Saturday night, in a game that featured multiple momentum swings, clutch shooting, and one very controversial call. With Sprayberry up 58-56 with just under a minute to play, Pope guard Garrett Brown was called for a controversial five-second call with two defenders on him. Greyhound head coach Pat Abney and the Pope bench immediately protested the call, arguing that the defenders had rotated on Brown and that the call shouldn’t have been made. Prolonged protesting resulted in technical fouls on the bench and on Brown. Sprayberry junior Alijah Brown hit four of the five technical foul free throws to build a 62-56 lead with 26 seconds on the clock, …

Sprayberry girls' and boys' teams win handily over Kell
Sprayberry's girls and boys basketball teams won Region 5-AAAA games on Friday, taking both on the road at Kell High School. The Lady Yellow Jackets, behind a 19-point performance from Nadia Ogene, took control of a close game in the second half and cruised to a 54-41 win over the Lady Longhorns. Carly Ridge added 15 points for Sprayberry. For Kell, both Naomi Stuger and Nikki Eggers scored 10 points. In the second game of the evening, Kell got 22 points from Jordan Bagwell and 16 points from Kendall Crute, but the Longhorns played catch-up all night to the Sprayberry Yellow Jackets. Sprayberry jumped out to a quick lead as Amonte Potter scored 15 of his game-high 23 points in the first quarter. The Yellow Jackets were never threatened and…

The girls survived a comeback scare after jumping out to a 25-0 lead.
Sprayberry guard Duncan Lunsford hit three clutch free throws with two seconds left in the game that appeared to send the game to overtime. But Lithia Springs guard Femi Ojuolape had other plans. The junior guard drained a three-pointer from the left wing as the buzzer sounded to send Yellow Jackets to a 58-55 defeat. Those final two seconds seemed like an eternity to Sprayberry head coach Marc Carver. “When you come out on the losing end it always feels like it was too long. But when you hit a shot like that, what can you say? They came back and earned the win. You’ve got to give them credit. Maybe we’ll get a chance to see them again in the region tournament,” Carver said. The final play unfolded exactly the way that Carver did not want …
