The Cobb Board of Commissioners recently approved several items funded through the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax. These actions included: County staff and Acworth Mayor Tommy Allegood also provided commissioners with an update on collections and expenditures from the current SPLOST. This four-year 1 percent sales tax will be collected until December 2015 and must be spent on voter approved projects. Renovations to the Northeast Cobb facility are planned to continue until October.
The Mountain View Aquatic Center in Northeast Cobb County has been closed all summer because of a complete renovation that is expected to be complete by October. The renovation is one part of the $82 million in projects designed to renovate, maintain and update Cobb County's parks and recreation facilities. The projects are paid for by SPLOST funds. According to information provided by the office of Cobb District 3 Commissioner JoAnn Birrell, several milestones in the renovation were hit in recent weeks. The painting of the natatorium ceiling and steel structures was completed by July 23. Without a doubt, the upcoming transportation referendum has been a hot topic throughout metro Atlanta. It’s no secret that most municipalities are urging "yes" votes on TSPLOST. Without it, officials are going to have to look at other ways to raise funds for traffic and transportation projects. The Cobb County Board of Education will set the 2012-13 calendar after choosing three or five furlough days at its meeting tonight.
The Cobb County Board of Education will take up the budget, the next SPLOST and Teach for America at its regular meeting tonight. Aside from a couple of Northeast Cobb items, the biggest issue on the agenda is final passage of the $841.9 million fiscal 2013 budget, which runs from July 1, 2012, to June 30, 2013. Once the board approves a budget, it will have to agree on a school calendar to implement the furlough says. The elections board's decision means a July 31 referendum is likely, and sales could start Aug. 12.
Cobb County is back on the Sunday wagon, at least until mid-August. The county Board of Elections and Registration decided during a special meeting Friday morning not to fight a voter challenge to the referendum that approved Sunday package sales of alcohol in unincorporated parts of Cobb. That means Sunday sales will not start June 3 as now scheduled. It also means all citizens in Cobb County will likely have the chance to vote on Sunday sales again July 31, even though almost 70 percent of county voters already said yes March 6. Davis and Keheley elementary school staffers and students will find spruced-up buildings and campuses when they return for the 2012-13 year. The Cobb County Board of Education approved construction contracts for SPLOST-funded work at both Northeast Cobb schools during its meeting Thursday night. Keheley will get more work than expected. The Cobb County Board of Education will take time tonight to recognize Kell High musicians back from a national competition in Indianapolis. The Kell Percussion Ensemble sent two groups to the invitation-only Sandy Feldstein National Percussion Festival this month, becoming the first high school to have two ensembles at the event. The school board will include the Kell percussionists at the start of its regular meeting tonight at 7 at the Central Office, 514 Glover St., Marietta. A year of planning, zoning and development controversy in 2011 has positioned Canton Road Corridor for beautification and business growth in 2012. His State of the County address says the tough decisions of 2011 have Cobb in a good place on 2012.
Tim Lee acted like a man seeking four more years as Cobb County’s top elected official when he delivered his State of the County address Monday morning. The chairman of the Cobb Board of Commissioners led a crowd of nearly 400 business and political leaders through the county’s economic struggles and successes of the past year and celebrated where the county sits now. “Cobb County is ready for anything 2012 may throw at it,” Lee said, because the board under his leadership did what was necessary in 2011.
