Last Chance: Summer's Must-Reads

Sure, school is back in session, but the kids don't have to be the only ones hitting the books this month.

Although Labor Day marks the last hurrah for white pants, barbeques and kids up late on a Sunday night, it is not the end of the season. People, until the clock strikes midnight on Sept. 21, it's still summer. And that means there's just enough time to squeeze in another good book atop your favorite lounge chair. Not sure what to read for your last hurrah of summer? Fear not, we've cobbled together some best-sellers from The New York Times and the Los Angeles Times, along with a few staff favorites from summers past. All you need to make your experience complete is a nice cold glass of iced tea lemonade. Fiction Non-fiction Be sure to tell us in your comments about your favorite summer read. Keep up with Marietta news by subscribing to our…

For the Love of Books

Books can take you anywhere you can imagine, and many places you never could.

I’ve met Dahmer, Gacy and peeked inside some of the most twisted minds imaginable. Currently, I’m in 1777, marching along with George Washington on our desperate fight for freedom. As you can probably tell, I’ve been on a non-fiction spree. But fiction is my passion. And with fiction, you usually get a movie. I have a hard time transitioning from books to movies. When I read, I create images in my mind. Specific settings, how the characters should look, and how they sound. When a director puts them on the massive screen, if they don’t match my vision, I’m sadly disappointed. That’s why I started writing…

My Kid Can Read ... Kind Of

I forget how and when I learned to read, but it happened. I'm keeping this in mind as I watch Ethan, 6, learn to read and struggle with understanding the screwed-up language we call English.

It’s been a long time since I learned to read. I have been reading well ... since I learned to read. I love books and escaping into my own mind for a while. I forget how and when exactly I learned to read, but it happened. I'm keeping this in mind as Ethan struggles learning to read the screwed up language we call English. I help Ethan every night. We read and use flash cards. He just has to ask, "Why does 'a' sound like 'uh' in 'what' when that is clearly a 'u' sound?" and "What about the fact that 'tr' actually makes the same sound as 'chr'?" I have no answers. I know that as fellow parents a lot of y'all have had to already answer these questions. Some of you are probably shaking your heads and thinking, "Oh, just wait until you have to…
