Lassiter Foils Milton's Upset Bid

The Trojans remain undefeated after a big rally in the second half; Walton edged Wheeler after trailing by 13 in the fourth quarter.

Friday was a wild night in Region 5-AAAAAA high school football action, and that's putting it mildly. Wheeler had Walton on the ropes in what would have been the upset of the year, at least in games played in Cobb. At the same time in Alpharetta, Milton was rolling out to a big, and surprising, lead against undefeated and second-ranked Lassiter. But as the games wore on, the favorites figured out how to get back in their games, and ultimately win them, in very different ways. Walton got a touchdown run from Tyren Jones and a touchdown pass from Price Wilson to D.J. Smith to erase a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit and nip Wheeler on the road, 24-23. Lassiter quarterback Eddie Printz threw for four touchdowns in the second half and 409 yards…

Thursday Night Football for Sprayberry

For the second year in a row, the Yellow Jackets play at Pope a day before the traditional high school schedule.

Perhaps last year's game was just the appetizer. For the second year in a row, the Pope vs. Sprayberry game will be played on a Thursday night -- tonight, in fact, at Pope's home field, 3001 Hembree Road. And it's a big Region 7-AAAAA subdivision B game for the Greyhounds and Yellow Jackets, who will kick off a little earlier than usual as well -- at 7 p.m. In last year's game, Sprayberry led Pope 21-6 going into the fourth quarter before the Greyhounds recovered for a 27-21 Homecoming win. Just as last year, is being played a day early for television purposes. It is part of the Georgia High School Association's agreement with WSB-TV, which will air the contest online and on Comcast Channel 248 and Charter Channel 126. Television coverage …

Walton, Lassiter Scratch Out Wins

Pope and Kell won easily on Friday, while Wheeler and Sprayberry lost Homecoming games.

After three quarters Friday, Lassiter had just 16 points on the scoreboard.  Woodstock's defense had something to do with that, along with a few injuries for the Trojans.  But Lassiter, ranked No. 2 in Class AAAAAA, pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 30-7 in a Region 5AAAAAA game.  Eddie Printz threw for 170 yards and a touchdown, Willie Police scored a touchdown and so did linebacker Patrick Levandoski, on an interception return in the fourth quarter.  The Trojans (5-0, 2-0) can now turn their full attention toward Friday's clash with Walton on Friday. The 6th-ranked Raiders (4-1, 2-0) won their Homecoming game 21-7 over Cherokee, as Tyren Jones ran for 180 yards and scored two touchdowns in another Region 5AAAAAA game.  After the …

Both teams are expected to be among the best in the state again this fall.  Pope and Kell qualified for the …

Sprayberry Yellow Jackets Fall to Pope

The loss drops Sprayberry to 3-4 and 2-2.

The visiting Sprayberry Yellow Jackets took what appeared to be a commanding 21-6 fourth quarter lead over the Greyhounds in a critical game for both teams in Region 5-AAAA.  But Pope scored three touchdowns after that, including the game-winner with 18 seconds remaining, to finish off the festivities in rousing fashion with a 27-21 win.  The Greyhounds moved to 6-1 on the season and 3-1 in region play as they prepare for undefeated East Paulding next week. The loss drops Sprayberry to 3-4 and 2-2. Senior Dana Koerner was named Pope's homecoming queen.  We've got all the highlights here in this video report, so sit back and enjoy!

The game at the Hound Pound will be the renewal of another East Cobb backyard rivalry, with 5-1 Pope looking to keep pace near the top of the Region 5-AAAA North standings. Sprayberry is 3-3. Both teams are 2-1 in region play. The Trojans (5-1) plays Wheeler Thursday evening. The football game will be a challenging one for the Wildcats (3-3).

Lassiter Drops Out; Walton Ranked 6th

The first loss for the Trojans dropped them out of the Top 10.

Walton's win over Lassiter last Friday kept the Raiders at the No. 6 spot in the Georgia Athletic Coaches Association Class AAAAA football poll. The same fate was suffered by Pope, which had been ranked No. 9 in the Class AAAA rankings but lost 33-7 to Kell last week.  Walton is off this week, while Lassiter (4-1) will try to rebound against struggling Cherokee (1-5) in Region 5-AAAAA play.  Also in Region 5-AAAAA, Wheeler (3-3) plays host to Etowah (3-3).  In Region 5-AAAA, Pope (4-1) visits North Paulding (3-3), Kell (4-2) entertains Osborne (1-4), and Sprayberry (2-3) is at home against Hiram (3-3). The Walker School (2-3) travels to Bremen (2-3) in a Region 6-A game.

Northeast Cobb Friday Football Preview

The Walton-Lassiter, Pope-Kell games highlight tonight's action involving East and Northeast Cobb schools.

Northeast and East Cobb will be the center of attention not only locally but beyond Friday night as two key contests are on tap involving backyard rivals that are off to strong starts this season.  Lassiter (4-0, 0-0) at Walton (5-0, 1-0) -- This highly-anticipated battle of unbeatens in Region 5-AAAAA is the game of the week not just in Cobb but across the state as Georgia Public Television will air from Raider Valley, with kickoff at 8 p.m.  Lassiter is ranked 8th in Class 5A behind quarterback Eddie Printz, who leads Cobb with nearly 900 yards passing and eight touchdowns. Walton's star was in the Trojans' backfield last year. Junior Tyren Jones is the top rusher in Class 5A with nearly 800 yards and he's run for 200 yards or more three…

Walton-Lassiter Game on GPTV

Tyren Jones of Walton, the state's rushing leader, faces his old team in Friday's East Cobb football showdown.

The Friday night football showdown between Walton and Lassiter is shaping up to be one of the biggest in the East Cobb area this season.  It's also been declared ready for prime-time television viewing.  The contest at Raider Valley between the two Class AAAAA unbeatens is the featured game of the week for Georgia Public Television, which means that kickoff time is a bit later than usual.  Instead of getting underway at 7:30 p.m., the start time is 8:05 p.m. The Walton-Lassiter game is notable in another significant way. One of the players to watch is Walton running back Tyren Jones, who already has rushed for 920 yards for the season, the tops in Georgia. Jones, a junior, transferred from Lassiter over the summer.   Unranked Walton is 5-0…
