TSPLOST Debate Set for NE Cobb

Your chance to ask questions and hear the pros and cons of the regional transportation sales tax is coming this month.

One of the most interesting events in the run-up to the 2011 referendum on the Cobb County SPLOST was the debate between proponent Rose Wing and opponent Lance Lamberton. Now we have a chance for something similar in Northeast Cobb for the TSPLOST referendum July 31. The Mountain View Community Center will be the site May 29 for a town-hall meeting and debate on the proposed 1 percent, 10-year, regional sales tax for transportation projects. A majority vote across 10 counties will decide the referendum, so even if Cobb voters reject the referendum, it could go into effect. The debate, organized by state 44th House District candidate JoEllen Smith of Northeast Cobb, will pit MAVEN representative Steve Labovitz of the McKenna Long & Aldridge…

I-75 Toll Project Revs Up Again

The new lanes will open in early 2018 under a revamped public-private partnership, the state says.

The Georgia Department of Transportation is moving forward with the addition of toll lanes alongside Interstates 75 and 575 under the Northwest Corridor project. GDOT announced the schedule and new approach for the project Friday. Gov. Nathan Deal pulled the plug on the $950 million, 29.7-mile project late last year because he did not agree with giving the contractor control of the road and the tolls in return for paying upfront costs. The revised project will still involve two reversible toll lanes running from along I-75 from I-285 to I-575 and single reversible lanes running north from the I-75/575 split along I-75 to Hickory Grove Road and along I-575 to Sixes Road. The tolls still will vary, rising as the interstate becomes more …

TSPLOST Criticism Drives Town Hall

Northeast Cobb Commissioner JoAnn Birrell's meeting turned into a heated discussion about the proposed 1-cent sales tax featuring Chairman Tim Lee.

Northeast Cobb Commissioner JoAnn Birrell’s town-hall meeting turned into an impromptu anti-TSPLOST rally during the question-and-answer session Wednesday evening. The July 31 referendum on the 10-year, 1 percent regional sales tax wasn’t the only thing on the minds of the more than 100 people who crowded into the community room at at the Mountain View Regional Library. But it was the issue Northeast and East Cobb residents returned to repeatedly, peppering Birrell and Cobb Board of Commissioners Chairman Tim Lee with questions about costs, sustainability, what happens after 10 years and the wisdom of pouring billions of dollars into mass transit. Lee noted that Cobb County is expected to receive 98 percent of the money it pays into the …
