Unbeaten Lassiter Likely No. 1 Team

The Trojans finished their regular season a perfect 10-0; see who they and Kell will be playing in the state playoffs next weekend.

Lassiter High School has been perfect before in a football regular season. But this time, the Trojans will enter the state playoffs with an even loftier status than in 2009, when they fell to Colquitt County in the first round after going 10-0. Thanks to Colquitt's stunning win over No. 1 Camden County on Friday, second-ranked Lassiter is expected to take over the top spot in the polls when the Georgia High School Association playoffs begin next weekend. Lassiter, which rolled over Etowah 34-6 on Friday to post a perfect 10-0 regular season, will play host to Brookhaven in the first round.  Here's the complete Class AAAAAA playoff bracket, which also includes Walton, Wheeler, Marietta, North Cobb, Hillgrove and McEachern. Lassiter vs. Walton: The Rivalry

The "East Cobb Super Bowl" will be renewed Friday, but this is about a lot more than a football game.

Of course it's a football game.  When two of the Top 10 teams in Class AAAAAA get together, it's a very big football game.  As both of their meetings were last year, including the state semifinals.  But when Lassiter High School and Walton High School square off in anything, it's more than the "East Cobb Super Bowl" in football terms.  In addition to their multi-sport athletic prowess, Walton and Lassiter will be boasting their highly touted marching bands.  And both are among the top academic high schools in Cobb County and Georgia.  Tonight's game at Lassiter's Frank Fillman Stadium is also Homecoming for the Trojans, with a parade veering down Shallowford Road from the Home Depot on Sandy Plains Road to the school starting at 5:30 p.m…

Wheeler, Sprayberry Kick Off Season

The longtime East Cobb rivals meet Friday night as high school football gets underway.

After coming close to posting winning seasons in 2011, Wheeler and Sprayberry want to get over hump this year.  Sprayberry reached the first round of the Georgia High School Association state playoffs after posting a 5-5 regular season record, then got clobbered by eventual Class AAAA champion Tucker in the first round. Wheeler was 2-3 in mid-season, then fell to a 4-6 finish when it hit the fat end of the schedule, including lopsided losses to Lassiter and Walton, semifinalists and finalists in Class AAAAA, respectively.  That's still a major improvement for the Wildcats, who had been 1-29 from 2008-2010. The East-Northeast Cobb rivals will meet in a non-region game at Wheeler starting at 7:30 p.m. Friday seeking some positive early …

Ex-Pope Baseball Star Signs With Cubs

After being drafted in June, Duane Underwood is reporting for rookie-league duty in Arizona.

Duane Underwood turns 18 next week. The former Pope High School baseball star got an early start on the celebration by signing a professional contract with the Chicago Cubs, who recently made him the 67th pick in the Major League Baseball draft.  Terms of the agreement were not announced; Underwood will report to the Cubs' rookie team in Mesa, Ariz. Underwood, a right-handed pitcher, was 6-1 with a 2.36 ERA with the Greyhounds as a senior, striking out 75 in 50-1/3 innings. He had signed a scholarship offer last fall to play baseball at the University of Georgia.  Two of his rookie teammates with the Cubs are the sons of famous athletes: Shawon Dunston, Jr., whose father Shawon Sr. was a star shortstop with the Cubs, and Trevor Gretzky. …

Lassiter Survives in Penalty Kicks

The Trojans beat Milton and will play at North Cobb next week, but Pope lost to Marist.

Lassiter is the No. 8 boys soccer team in the nation but needed penalty kicks to survive its opening game of the Georgia High School Association AAAAA playoffs at Milton on Tuesday night. The Trojans and Eagles were tied at 3 after regulation and overtime, according to the scores posted by the GHSA. Lassiter then was a perfect five for five on penalty kicks, while Milton connected on only four of five, giving the Trojans the win. Lassiter advanced to play at Region 4-AAAAA champion North Cobb next Tuesday in the second round. The Warriors beat Islands at home, 8-1. Tuesday's win raised Lassiter's record to 16-2-1 and came as ESPN HS released the latest Powerade Fab 50 national rankings. The Trojans, who began the year No. 1, moved up from …

Mo Isom on Ellen DeGeneres' Show

The Northeast Cobb resident talks about trying out for the LSU football team and the personal traumas she has overcome.

Lassiter grad and LSU homecoming queen Mo Isom, now done with her college career as a soccer goalie, was a guest last week on The Ellen DeGeneres Show to talk about trying out for the college football team as a kicker and to show off her kicking skills. Isom kicked off a carpet that looked like a mini football field. She scored both of her mock field goal attempts. Aside from sports, she spoke to Ellen about her father's suicide and a car accident that nearly took her life.
