Lennar Celebrates Wexford Subdivision

The grand-opening event Saturday and Sunday will promote the 18-home development in the Lassiter school district.

Lennar Atlanta is holding a grand-opening celebration this weekend for Northeast Cobb's Wexford subdivision, the builder's fifth housing development in Northeast and East Cobb County. Food and door prizes will be available for people who visit the site of 18 single-family houses Saturday or Sunday, and you can register to win a voucher for a four-night cruise for two. The houses are 3,300 to 4,200 square feet and priced above $500,000. They are in the school district of Lassiter High, recently named the No. 7 public high school in Georgia by U.S. News & World Report. “We want home buyers to find everything they would ever want in a home at Wexford,” Lennar Atlanta Division President Todd Jones said. “Combining a prime location, outstanding…

Electronic Billboard Clears Opposition

Neighbors behind Canton Road wanted the sign lowered.

An electronic billboard for a Canton Road site won approval Tuesday despite the opposition of neighbors. The Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted 4-1 to allow Clear Channel to install the electronic sign in place of a traditional static billboard on a commercial lot at 3205 Canton Rd. in Northeast Cobb. Commissioner Helen Goreham voted no without explanation. She did not speak during the 20-minute hearing. Canton Road Neighbors President Carol Brown did speak against the zoning variance. She was one of six people at the hearing at 100 Cherokee St. who opposed the billboard, though the only one to address the board. Brown said the neighbors behind the sign on Hilltop Drive weren’t against the billboard as long as Clear Channel would go …

Some zoning cases seem straightforward: "Hey, you can't turn your half-acre lot next to my house into a preserve for Bengal tigers!" But this one has some interesting nuances. Would a lower sign hurt the value of the Canton Road property? Does it matter if the higher sign potentially harms the neighboring values? Should a zoning decision be based on what's there now (a burned-out house 478 feet …   more ›

Trickum Road Subdivision Seeks Zoning OK

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners also faces an electronic billboard and an outdoor merchandise display as part of its zoning agenda Tuesday morning.

A 12-house subdivision, an electronic billboard and an outdoor merchandise display are the Northeast Cobb items on the agenda for this morning’s zoning meeting of the Cobb County Board of Commissioners. Alice and John Bostic, operating as Southeast Real Estate Acquisitions, are asking to rezone 5.42 acres on Trickum Road south of Eula Drive from R-20 to R-15 so they can build 12 single-family houses there instead of the nine now allowed. The two-story houses would be at least 2,400 square feet each and sell for $275,000 to $400,000. The Cobb County planning staff recommends approval of the proposal under several conditions, including a system of improvements to relieve Trickum Road traffic. The other two zoning items involved the Canton …

Birrell Town-Hall Meeting Today

The District 3 county commissioner will face the public at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

District 3 Cobb County Commissioner JoAnn Birrell will offer updates and answer questions during her quarterly town-hall meeting Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the Mountain View Regional Library. Her last town-hall meeting previewed some issues that soon followed—the rezoning for the planned Movie Tavern, the new subdivision at Holly Springs and Post Oak Tritt roads, the upcoming roundabout at Holly Springs and Davis roads—and featured at least one surprise, an extended discussion of coyotes. You can count on a good turnout of county government leaders at Birrell's meetings, and, with candidate qualifying only two weeks away, you'll surely have a chance to put faces to many of the names you'll see on the ballot July 31. Northeast Cobb Patch will …

Canton Road Sidewalk Goes to High Court

The Georgia Supreme Court will decide whether Cobb County was too quick to seize property.

The process behind the Canton Road Corridor project goes before the Georgia Supreme Court this afternoon. In Adkins et al. vs. Cobb County, Northeast Cobb lawyer Russell Adkins and Cobb County Juvenile Court Judge James Whitfield, his former law partner, claim that the county violated due process in trying to seize property for a sidewalk that’s part of the Canton Road project. The Adkins & Associates law firm sits on the property at 2653 Canton Rd., The Marietta Daily Journal said. Today’s case is about timing. Adkins and Whitfield say they weren’t given enough time in early 2010 to respond to the county’s declaration of taking under a state law that started the clock when the county filed its declaration, not when the property owners …

Viewfinder: Mabry Park Tree Planting

Garrison Mill Elementary, Cub Scout Pack 471 and residents planted trees recently at Mabry Park.

Garrison Mill Elementary, Cub Scout Pack 471 and residents planted 60 trees on Mabry Park land recently to help provide a future habitat for wildlife and a buffer for the adjacent properties. The tree planting provided the Cub Scouts, other children and parents a "hands on" way to contribute to the development of the park. Their efforts created lasting meaning and memories. Northeast Cobb Patch first reported on Mabry Park during its preview in November 2010. The park's master plan meeting in spring 2011 was followed by a second preview and a meeting to discuss construction and fundraising. Many Northeast Cobb residents are asking, "When will the park be built?" "The answer is simple. We can begin to use the park as soon as we get the …
