Gravitt Rescue Fund Exceeds $8K

The money raised to care for a dog injured on I-75 has paid for his surgical bills.

The Marietta woman who helped rescue a dog hit by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 75 asked for public donations to help pay for his recovery.  Northeast Cobb Patch talked to Dana Wachsmann in April about her fundraising efforts for Gravitt, a likely stray who was named after the Marietta Police officer who rushed the animal to emergency veterinary care.  Several operations, including surgery to reattach the dog's pelvis to its spine, came to an estimated $7,500. Wachsmann contacted Patch this week to report that more than $8,000 in donations has been received for Gravitt's medical care. She also said that Marietta resident Deann Seckinger and her family, which took in the dog on a temporary basis, will be giving Gravitt a permanent home …

Poll: Would You Sue Over Fake Facebook Profile?

A cyberbullying case in Cobb lands in court as a middle school student sues two classmates over a Facebook account she believes they set up in her name.

Palmer Middle School student Alexandria Boston has filed a lawsuit against two classmates she believes created a fake Facebook page in her name, reports Roswell Patch. The libel suit, in part, suggests Boston uses drugs and has left obscene and racists posts on other profiles, according to the Associated Press.  Roswell lawyer Natalie Woodward, whose firm just recently moved onto Canton Street, has been hired to represent Boston. According to The American Bar Association Journal, police have said that the incident did not constitute a crime. Palmer school officials have said the Facebook page was not created on school computers. Would you file a libel suit if your child's classmate created a fake Facebook page that defamed him or her? …

Coexisting With Coyotes: Tips for Avoiding Animal Attacks

Coyotes sometimes enter Cobb neighborhoods in search of food as their habitat becomes increasingly smaller due to urban sprawl.

In February, Northeast Cobb residents raised concerns at Cobb County Commissioner JoAnn Birrell’s town-hall meeting about coyotes killing animals near Rocky Mount Elementary School and Pope High. Residents are looking for ways to deal with the coyote problem. Here are some proactive tips from the city of Roswell on avoiding aggressive behavior by coyotes:

Take Advantage of What God Has Made Available to You

My children have heard me make this statement so many times they’re probably sick of it by now. But if we’ll take this statement and turn it into a practice, we’ll see God show up and we’ll see Him provide in ways we never imagined.

By Shelley Hendrix, Church4Chicks Founder There are a lot of resources and talents that I do not have. If I wanted to make a list, it would be unending because of all the resources and all the talents that exist in this world. Many of us make these mental lists (of what we don’t have and why we can’t do what we’d like to do because we don’t have what we’d like to have) instead of taking advantage of what God HAS made available to us. Remember, He owns all of what we do possess and all of what we do not possess as well. And we will go a lot further and get there a lot faster when we stop focusing on what we don’t have and begin to make the best with what we do have. I invite you to read this passage from 2 Kings: One day the wife of a man …

Rescued I-75 Dog Recovers

The dog whose life was saved on Interstate 75 by five Cobb County residents is expected to make a complete recovery.

On a Saturday morning in March, the traffic on Interstate 75 in Marietta came to a halt when a motorist hit a dog. Five Cobb County residents came together in an effort to save the dog's life. Gravitt, named for the Marietta police officer that helped get him emergency veterinary care, survived. Since Northeast Cobb Patch reported Gravitt's story, people across the nation have sent donations, prayers and messages to support his recovery. But despite the publicity, no owner has claimed Gravitt and the man who stopped in I-75 traffic to carry him to safety still has not been identified. Gravitt is recovering from a fractured pelvis and knee surgery at the Cobb home of Deann Seckinger, one of the people who helped rescue him. He had his …

Trooper Mistake Led to Florida Crashes

A probe into the Interstate 75 accidents that killed five members of a Cobb church found no criminal violations.

A Florida Highway Patrol officer who reopened a smoke- and fog-covered portion of Interstate 75 in January did not have proper training and was not aware of procedures governing such an incident, according to an investigators' report issued Thursday.  A total of 11 people, including five members of a Cobb County church, were killed in a series of crashes on the interstate caused by the smoke and fog. But investigators from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement did not find any criminal violations. According to their report, Highway Patrol Lt. John Gourley decided to reopen the stretch of I-75 near Gainesville in the early hours of Jan. 29 despite protests from Highway Patrol Sgt. Bruce Simmons.  The highway had been closed because of a…

25 Moving Boxes of Toys

My family recently moved into our new home. We moved at least 25 boxes of toys for our two boys. Where did all these toys come from?

In my teenage years, I was lured into being a nanny by a family with five children. My pay was a whopping $6 an hour. They had moved into the neighborhood and, looking back, the mother must have been a tiny bit overwhelmed. One of my duties was to organize the playroom. The empty 10' x 10' room in the basement was filled with 35 moving boxes marked "toys." What family has 35 boxes of toys? After my family's move 9 days ago, I now know that family wasn't crazy for having 35 boxes of toys for five kids. We moved at least 25 boxes of toys for our two boys, Ethan and Quinn. How on earth did this happen? We packed a storage POD two years ago with lots of toys that the boys wouldn't miss for a few months...we planned to be in our own home by …

Cobb Forum to Tackle Teen Drinking

Learn about the problem and solutions Thursday night live on Northeast Cobb Patch.

Cobb County will be talking about underage drinking Thursday night, and you can be part of the conversation. You’re invited to join the audience in the Cobb Board of Commissioners boardroom at 100 Cherokee St. Or you can watch the forum live here on Northeast Cobb Patch or through the task force’s website. Either way, you can participate by submitting questions for the panel and by using what you learn to help solve the problem of underage drinking. The 2010 Georgia Student Health Survey found that among Cobb County School District …

Northeast Cobb Fire Alert

The National Weather Service released a fire danger statement Monday afternoon because of weather that may increase the risk of fires.

The National Weather Service issued a fire danger statement for central and north Georgia through Tuesday because low humidity and high wind makes for perfect conditions for brush fires. No outdoor burning permits were issued Monday. Firefighters say this year’s dry winter could mean an active brush fire season. "Cobb Fire goes by the information by the wind speed...if 10 above we suggest no burning whatsoever. It should be understood that the strong winds will rapidly spread any fire," Cobb Fire & Emergency Services spokeswoman Denell Boyd told Northeast Cobb Patch. With windy, dry conditions like we saw Monday, the Cobb fire department warns that it only takes seconds for a small yard fire to get out of control.
