Dear Northeast Cobb Patch, As if America doesn't look pathetic enough with its terrible economy, debt to China, and 9.2% unemployment, now we've scrapped the space program. We'll have to rely on the Russian, French and Japanese space programs. What is American known for now? Reality television, wasting lives and money in the Iraq war, and Casey-what's-her-face. Assassinating bin Laden didn't even renew our glory. This was once a great nation known for its manufacturing industry, a space program, and opportunity. Now our economy is tanking. More American companies are moving overseas. Jobs are getting outsourced. What are our country's worthy goals to sustain this nation? Is this country going to hell, or what? Atlantis has blasted off on NASA's last space shuttle launch. The historic liftoff occurred 30 years and three months after the very first shuttle flight.
Four astronauts are riding Atlantis to orbit. The shuttle is bound for the International Space Station, making one final supply run. Hundreds of thousands of spectators jammed Cape Canaveral and surrounding towns for the farewell. Kennedy Space Center itself was packed with shuttle workers, astronauts and 45,000 invited guests, the maximum allowed. The flight will last 12 days. Weather permitting, Atlantis will return to Kennedy, where it will end up on permanent display, reports Russia Today.

The last time I watched a live shuttle launch it was in English class circa 1986. Things did not go well that launch. more ›
