Northeast Cobb High Five

Recycler Pays; Will Melanie Moore Win?

Here's what you need to know to start Aug. 11 in Northeast Cobb.

1. Today should be a prototypical August day in Northeast Cobb, according to the National Weather Service: a lot of sun, a high in the mid-90s and a 30 percent chance of showers popping up in the afternoon. The overnight low will be around 67. 2. Marietta Recycling had its day in Marietta Municipal Court on Wednesday and agreed to plead no contest to two noise ordinance violations and to pay the city $5,000, the Marietta Daily Journal reports. In return, the city dropped 33 other counts. Meanwhile, the MDJ adds, Marietta Recycling has sued to reverse Cobb County’s rejection of the company’s metal scrap yard in Northeast Cobb next to the East Cobb Baseball complex. 3. Marietta Recycling Attempts Compliance

The city cited the Marietta Recycling Center on Marble Mill Road with a violation of its noise ordinance May 18.

First Marietta Recycling failed to win Cobb County approval to establish a metal scrap yard and transfer station in Northeast Cobb, and then was cited May 18 for exceeding the noise level permitted under Marietta city code. The city's zoning director, Rusty Roth, said at the June 15 court hearing the judge agreed to a non-jury trial on Wednesday, August 10, unless compliance can be accomplished in three weeks. "The property owners have hired an acoustic engineer to work out a solution to reduce the sound level. They may be able to comply in three weeks," Roth said. If the Marietta Recycling Center on Marble Mill Road does not comply, the city's noise ordinance provides for fines up to $1,000. Meanwhile, Marietta Recycling has until mid-…

The city has cited the Marietta Recycling Center on Marble Mill Road with a violation of its noise ordinance and issued a court date of June 15. The city's noise ordinance provides for fines up to $1,000. Research into city records shows there have been numerous noise complaints about the Marble Mill Road facility over the years from Kennesaw Battle subdivision residents. City Councilman Anthony Coleman, who represents the neighborhood, told the Marietta Daily Journal: "Their license needs to be revoked. The bottom line is it impacts the citizens…

Commissioners Scrap Marietta Recycling's Transfer Station

The board voted 4-0 against a special land-use permit for a scrap metal facility on Canton Road in Northeast Cobb.

The Cobb County Board of Commissioners voted 4-0 this morning against an application for a special land-use permit allowing Marietta Recycling to operate a metal scrap yard and transfer station on Canton Road next to the East Cobb Baseball complex. The commissioners followed the recommendation of the county Planning Commission, which voted May 3 against Marietta Recycling's proposal. Parks Huff, a partner of Sams, Larkin and Huff Law Firm, represented Snapfinger Properties/Marietta Recycling at the meeting. He told the board the facility would produce less traffic than the East Cobb Baseball property and would promote sustainability and recycling by scrapping up to 2,000 tons of metal a month. In urging denial of the application, Carol …

The Water Cooler

Audition for 'There Goes the Bride'

Gather around the water cooler to discuss what's happening in Northeast Cobb.

1. How do you feel about the decision at Tuesday's Cobb County Planning Commission meeting to deny Marietta Recycling's land-use permit application to operate a scrap metal yard and transfer station on Canton Road?  I can only imagine the amount of metal waste produced in our large county. Recycling is important. If not the Canton Road property, where should a scrap metal yard and transfer station be located? The Planning Commission recommended denying the Marietta Recycling application by a 5-0 vote. It is up to the Board of Commissioners to vote it up or down, which will occur on Tuesday, May 17. Will you attend the May 17 vote? 2. During the Monday Town Hall meeting, Senator Chip Rogers discussed the changes to the HOPE scholarship. In …

Marietta Recycling's Plans Scrapped

The Cobb Planning Commission voted 5-0 to deny the company's application to operate a metal scrap yard and transfer station on Canton Road.

The Cobb County Planning Commission this morning unanimously rejected an application for a special land-use permit allowing Marietta Recycling to operate a metal scrap yard and transfer station on Canton Road next to the East Cobb Baseball complex. The 5-0 vote against the application, formally made by Snapfinger Properties, means Marietta Recycling has 120 days to cease the operations at the site, which used to be Hope Lumber. Marietta Recycling had been placed on notice that it was violating code without the special use permit, and the enforcement was suspended until the Planning Commission acted, code enforcement officer Kim Wakefield told the commission. The scrap yard had alarmed Northeast Cobb neighbors, and several turned out today …
