Alfred Watkins is retiring after guiding the school's award-winning band program for 31 years.
Alfred Watkins has been synonymous with more than just the award-winning band programs he has guided at Lassiter High School for more than three decades. He's become synonymous with so much of the school's history. Watkins, who has been with Lassiter since 1982, announced in March he would be retiring at the end of the school year. Today's Lassiter graduation ceremonies at the KSU Convocation Center marks a symbolic, if not completely official, end to Watkins' tenure. The legacy he leaves behind is immense. Lassiter's marching band has been invited to the Tournament of Roses Parade four times, including in January. Graduations begin Thursday, and the Cobb County School District wants to make sure that family and friends who can't attend the ceremonies don't miss out. With the exception of McEachern in Powder Springs and Allatoona in Acworth, whose graduations will be held outdoors, most of the ceremonies will be streamed live. The top-ranked Trojans play at home Wednesday in their first round Class AAAAAA playoff game.
The Georgia High School Association's state soccer playoffs are underway, and teams from Cobb, Douglas and Paulding make up a significant number of teams in the field. Teams from Cobb were ranked No. 1 in the latest Class AAAAAA polls -- the Lassiter boys and the Harrison girls -- but several others also are considered contenders for state championships. The Lassiter boys are undefeated this season, boasting a perfect 16-0 record and have shut out 11 opponents. The Trojans, who last won a state title in 1996, will put that mark on the line at home Wednesday against South Gwinnett. Jake Montalbano, a student at Lassiter High School, will participate in the 2013 U.S. Naval Academy Summer Seminar program. The Naval Academy invited a select group of approximately 2,550 young men and women from around the nation and abroad to attend. The seminar is a fast-paced leadership experience for rising seniors in high school. This program helps educate, motivate and prepare selected students who are considering applying for admission to USNA. Summer Seminar teaches prospective applicants about life at the Naval Academy, where academics, athletics, and professional training are key elements in developing our nation's leaders. Each student will attend a six-day session and experience a glimpse of USNA life. Students will have the …

The Northeast Cobb high schools were judged to be among the best in Georgia.
Earlier this week Patch told you about the good marks for Lassiter and other East Cobb-area high schools as among the "most challenging" in the country. To illustrate how subjective these criteria are, we give you the latest high school rankings from U.S. News. While Lassiter High School fares well again -- it's considered the 7th-best in Georgia and No. 343 in the nation -- other "most challenging" schools in the area didn't make the list at all. One of those schools was Kell High School in Northeast Cobb. Sprayberry High School made both lists, coming in at No. 22 in Georgia and No. 1,343 in the country. Sales tax collections for renovations at Lassiter High School and Kincaid Elementary School will begin in 2016.
Renovations for Lassiter High School and Kincaid Elementary School will take place toward the end of the upcoming Cobb Education SPLOST IV collection period. Cobb County School District officials on Wednesday presented to the Board of Education a projected cashflow plan for some of the largest projects in the SPLOST IV, which was passed by voters in March. The two largest projects in Northeast Cobb are at Lassiter and Kincaid, but all schools in Cobb will be included in the new sales tax collection period, which begins on Jan. 1, 2014 and continues through Dec. 31, 2018. Lassiter is slated for a $12.7 million gymnasium replacement and Kincaid will receive a permanent classroom addition costing $3.2 million. According to Chris Ragsdale, the…

17 seniors gathered on Wednesday to make their college choices official.
Thanks to Katie Griffin of the Lassiter High School faculty for passing along today's signing day information 17 senior college-bound student-athletes: A total of seventeen Lassiter High School senior student athletes signed national letters of intent with top universities bringing the school’s total to thirty-seven students for the 2013 senior class. The final signing day included top programs Wake Forest, West Point and the University of Connecticut. “Words really can’t express how proud we are of this year’s senior student athletes. To send 37 students to play college sports is a testament to our students, coaches, teachers, parents and the entire Lassiter community,” commented Lassiter Athletic Director Art O’Neil. She's one of six from the East Cobb area named a recipient of a National Achievement Scholarship.
The Cobb County School District announced Monday that six high school seniors, all from the East Cobb area, have been named recipients of National Achievement Scholarships by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. Each student will receive $2,500 in college aid. The National Achievement Scholarships, which recognize academic excellence by African-American students, were awarded to more than 800 students nationwide. Recipients were asked to list their probable career fields, which are indicated in parenthesis:
