Whole Foods Recalls Cheese Product

The 21-state removal includes the Merchant's Walk store and Harry's Farmers Market.

Whole Foods Market is recalling ricotta salata sold in 21 states and Washington, D.C., including its store at Merchant's Walk in East Cobb and Harry's Farmers Market in Marietta. The cheese came from its supplier, Forever Cheese Inc. of Long Island City, N.Y., because it may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. That is an  organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women. The recalled Ricotta Salata …

Talenti plans to maintain its existing plant in Dallas but relocate its primary production headquarters to the Marietta Industrial Park and begin production later this year.

Talenti Gelato has acquired a former Kroger ice cream production facility in Marietta. The expansion represents the addition of up to 100 jobs in Marietta and the state of Georgia. Talenti plans to maintain its existing plant in Dallas but relocate its primary production headquarters to the Marietta Industrial Park and begin production later this year. “The country’s best-selling gelato will be right at home in one of America’s greatest communities, so hello Marietta,” said Bob Burns, vice president of operations for Talenti, who will be moving to the area to manage the new facility. Viewfinder: McCleskey Math and Science Fun Night

Students, families, and community members came together for a fun evening of games and activities.

McCleskey Middle School recently hosted its first Math and Science Fun Night. Participants made Silly Putty from borax and glue, learned to make origami cranes, watched a robotics demonstration, and played Battleship and a musical version of “Operation.” Parents competed with students to find out if they were indeed “Smarter Than an 8th Grader.” Families relaxed in the “McCleskey Diner” for dinner provided by Partners in Education Chick-fil-A and Kroger. Door prizes were donated by Kelli Green Nursery.

How the Storm Has Hit Grocery Stores

Kroger's Atlanta-area director of communications gives an interview to Patch.

The Kroger on Canton Highway was open on Tuesday when the winter storm had its icy grip on our community, and it has remained open. Residents brave enough to walk or drive on the icy roads have been able to get groceries and gas. Tractor-trailers delivering groceries to area supermarkets have been delayed by the winter storm. Customers are arriving at grocery stores to find empty shelves. To find out what impact the storm has had on local grocery stores, Patch interviewed Glynn Jenkins, Kroger's Atlanta Division director of communications and public relations.  He responded to our questions via e-mail. Patch: How difficult has it been for employees to make it to work/for the stores to open? Glynn Jenkins: The safety of our customers and …

A tip of the hat to Mr. Jenkins for the robotic, Kroger-speak comments. Rarely do you see six or so responses devoid of even the slightest conversational tone. Fascinating to see mindless corporate indoctrination at work.   more ›

Rent Movies at Redbox for a Buck

Save money on movies by renting from Redbox.

Tired of paying high rental fees for DVD movie new releases?  Redbox vending machines offer new releases for just $1 a day.  No more making an extra trip to a movie rental store. You can rent a movie while at the grocery store or Walmart. Rent DVD for $1/day or BlueRay for $1.49/day. Rent a movie online from Redbox.com and pick the movie up at your local Redbox location, or simply walk up to a Redbox and make your movie selection on the spot. I used Redbox for the first time this week and rented "Eat Pray Love."  When I returned it the next evening, I couldn't resist renting "Grown Ups." It was incredibly convenient and I needed a good laugh. Another advantage to Redbox movies is that they do not have to be returned to the same location …

Last-Minute Turkey Trot

Shoppers flock to the grocery store to fill out their Thanksgiving tables.

While many other stores were closed for the holiday, grocery stores that stayed open at least part of the day kept busy. Kroger had a steady stream of last-minute grocery shoppers as families bought fresh veggies, desserts, drinks and bread. Some individuals were preparing for large family gatherings, while others had more intimate meals planned with loved ones. Harry's Farmers Market, which stayed open until 2 p.m., used social media to spread the word it had turkeys, cooked and raw, available and gave a fresh turkey away with a Twitter contest midday.
