The Longhorns' track star won the state 100-meter hurdle crown on Saturday.
Athletes in 10 events who represented Cobb, Douglas and Paulding schools brought back first-place medals from the Georgia High School Association girls state track and field championships in Albany. Two teams also peformed well in the event, which ran from Thursday through Saturday, as Kell High School finished second in the Class 5A meet and Marietta was third in Class 6A. Kell's Kendell Williams closed out her illustrious career with three titles, winning the 5A high jump, long jump and 100-meter hurdles. She earned 11 crowns in her high school career, and on Friday broke her own state record in the long jump. Marietta's Jenessa Jackson won the Class 6A shot put and was second in the discus throw, while an all-Cobb trio swept the 100-…

Kell High School track and field star Kendell Williams has won her third consecutive Georgia Gatorade award for being the best athlete in her sport. Williams, who won eight state individual championships, helped the Longhorns finish fifth in the Class AAAA girls meet this spring. The Marietta Daily Journal reported Friday that she is a finalist for the national girls high school track award that will be announced later this month. As a junior, Williams won three state titles, in the 100-meter hurdles, the high jump and the long jump. She currently has the best time of any high school girl in the nation in the 110-meter hurdles and is second in the high jump. Williams recently finished second in the heptathlon in the USA Junior …

ESPN speculates on the rare opportunity for a high school student.
Putting "Olympics" and "Kendell Williams" in the same sentence should be easy for anyone who watched the Kell High School junior win three gold medals and set two state records at the AAAA Georgia girls track and field championships last week. She was the top individual scorer in the Georgia High School Association meet with 30 points, enough to place Kell fifth in the state all by herself. She beat the field by more than a second in the 100-meter hurdles. She beat the field by 2½ feet in the long jump and half a foot in the high jump. So, yeah, "future Olympian Kendell Williams" seems as safe as "future Hall of Famer Chipper Jones" at this point. The only question seems to be whether she'll be ready in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, when…

Editor's note: In one of those glitches that happen in online news sometimes, the update we did Saturday on Kendell Williams' hurdles championship vanished, except for the headline. We apologize for the confusion. Here's an abbreviated version of what we initially wrote, just for the record. Kendell Williams is such a dominant athlete as a high school junior that she single-handedly earned Kell fifth place in the Georgia High School Association AAAA girls track and field meet this weekend. Williams cruised to her third title of the meet Saturday by winning the 100-meter hurdles in 13.49 seconds, a tenth of a second slower than her state-record time in the preliminary but still fast enough to beat the rest of the field by more than a second…

Kendell Williams entered the state long jump competition at the AAAA meet this morning as the favorite; she left it as the record holder. The Kell High junior had the best qualifying jump for the meet at 19 feet, 7 inches—2 inches farther than second-best Alisia Jenkins of Statesboro and 3.75 inches short of the state record, set in 1999 by Tameisha King. Now Tameisha King is the answer to a trivia question: Who held the Georgia AAAA long jump record before Kendell Williams? Williams smashed the record with a jump of 20 feet, 8.5 inches, the GHSA reported on Twitter. That adds more than a foot to her 2012 best and almost 10 inches to the state mark. Williams was going for gold medal No. 2 this afternoon in the high jump. We'll update when …
