Kell Football Routed by Gainesville

The Longhorns lost a halftime lead and were eliminated from the second round of the state playoffs.

The Kell football team was looking good at halftime, as the Longhorns' high-powered offense was rolling at home to build a 35-21 lead over Gainesville. But the Red Elephants put on an offensive showing of their own after that, breaking a 42-42 deadlock enroute to a 61-42 win on Friday in the second round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs. For No. 4-ranked Kell, the early loss was a stunner. Star Brendan Langley, playing in his final game for Kell after committing to UGA earlier this week, caught five touchdown passes.  But the Longhorns had no answer for the Red Elephants' quarterback DeShaun Watson, who scored four of his five rushing touchdowns after halftime. He also threw for three more touchdowns. As Kell coach Derek Cook told The …

Kell Star Switches to UGA

Defensive back Brendan Langley says he'll sign with the Bulldogs, after originally committing to South Carolina.

Kell High School continues play in the state football playoffs in a home game against Gainesville on Friday.  But on Tuesday, one of its star players sorted out his long-term future by changing his mind about where he'll play college football. Defensive back Brendan Langley offered a verbal commitment to the Georgia Bulldogs, choosing one SEC school over another. Langley, who also has contributed to Kell as a running back and wide receiver this season, initially chose South Carolina.  But in an interview in Wednesday's edition of The Marietta Daily Journal, Kell coach Derek Cook said Langley had his heart set on Georgia all along.  “South Carolina didn’t push him away. I’ve had other kids go to South Carolina, and it’s a very good school, …

Big Subregion Wins for Sprayberry, Kell

While the Yellow Jackets held off Riverwood, the Longhorns rolled over Osborne on Friday.

What's been a trying season for the Sprayberry High School football team turned more promising when the final gun sounded on Friday. The Yellow Jackets held off Riverwood 24-21 after the visitors missed what would have been the tying field goal with 12 seconds left in the game. Sprayberry improved to 2-4 overall, and more importantly, won its first game in Region 7-AAAAA subregion B play. "Our boys didn’t have any quit in them. I told them that we’re 1-0 now and it’s a new season," Sprayberry coach Billy Shackelford told The Marietta Daily Journal. In the same subregion, the Kell High School Longhorns had little trouble against Osborne, as star senior Branden Langley came up big on both sides of the ball in a 34-7 win. The Longhorns, …

Walton, Lassiter Scratch Out Wins

Pope and Kell won easily on Friday, while Wheeler and Sprayberry lost Homecoming games.

After three quarters Friday, Lassiter had just 16 points on the scoreboard.  Woodstock's defense had something to do with that, along with a few injuries for the Trojans.  But Lassiter, ranked No. 2 in Class AAAAAA, pulled away in the fourth quarter to win 30-7 in a Region 5AAAAAA game.  Eddie Printz threw for 170 yards and a touchdown, Willie Police scored a touchdown and so did linebacker Patrick Levandoski, on an interception return in the fourth quarter.  The Trojans (5-0, 2-0) can now turn their full attention toward Friday's clash with Walton on Friday. The 6th-ranked Raiders (4-1, 2-0) won their Homecoming game 21-7 over Cherokee, as Tyren Jones ran for 180 yards and scored two touchdowns in another Region 5AAAAAA game.  After the …

Lassiter Continues in High Gear

The No. 2 Trojans play at home tonight against winless Woodstock; Kell and Sprayberry also are at home.

Their offensive numbers are daunting for opposing teams to ponder.  In their first four games of the season, the Lassiter Trojans are averaging 42.7 points a game.  A high-powered system that features quarterback Eddie Printz has risen to No. 2 in the Class AAAAAA rankings with very little suspense, and that is unlikely to change tonight. The Trojans (4-0, 1-0) continue Region 5AAAAAA play at home tonight against Woodstock (0-4, 0-1) in what figures to be a mismatch.  As last week's 41-6 win over Cherokee showed, Lassiter has been scoring early, and often, enjoying big halftime leads. The only exception has been the Trojans' dramatic last-second win over Hillgrove to start the season.  Printz has thrown for 806 yards, with nearly half of …

Walton Drops, Lassiter No. 2 in Poll

The latest high school football rankings reflect a weekend of upsets in Class AAAAAA.

Walton High School's loss to North Cobb on Friday night wasn't the only shocking result in Class AAAAAA high school football.  The surprising loss by defending state champion Grayson to Parkview also contributed to a major shakeup in the rankings that came out Monday.  According to Score Atlanta magazine, Walton fell from No. 3 to No. 6, while Lassiter moved up from No. 4 to No. 2. The new top-ranked team is Camden County.  Lassiter is coming off a 42-13 win over Kell, which fell from No. 3 in Class AAAAA to eighth.  Walton, Lassiter and Kell are the only Cobb schools ranked this week. Wheeler is 3-0, its best start in 15 seasons, but remains unranked.

Lassiter Rolls Kell 42-13 in Home Opener

The Lassiter Trojans struck quickly (and often) in a 42-13 win over the Kell Longhorns. The Trojans improve to 3-0, while the Longhorns fall to 2-1 for the season.

Lassiter, Kell Renew Rivalry Tonight

The two undefeated teams face off for the first time in two years.

The Trojans of Lassiter and Longhorns of Kell have had to wait two years to face each other on the gridiron, and with both teams off to 2-0 starts, tonight's 7:30 grudge match at Frank Fillman Stadium will be about more than bragging rights. Both Kell and Lassiter turned in impressive performances in their last games. The Trojans put up 42 points in the first half against Sprayberry and cruised to a 49-3 victory. Lassiter's offense racked up 442 yards, with runningback Lane Jackman earning his first-ever 100 yard rushing game. The walls of Troy were as strong as ever, limiting the Jackets to 84 net yards. The defense netted 12 tackles for loss and Senior safety Patrick Levandoski returned an interception for a touchdown, the first in his …

A Week Away From Cobb Kickoff

Corky Kell Classic teams Walton, Kell and McEachern are ranked in pre-season polls.

The start of the high school football season is just a week away, and some of Cobb's best teams are priming for an early spotlight.  Teams from East and Northeast Cobb such as Walton, Kell and McEachern will all be playing next Saturday in the Corky Kell Classic at the Georgia Dome.  Earlier this week, they all learned, not surprisingly, that they're ranked in the Top 10 in preseason polls. Earlier this year, the Georgia High School Association went from five to six classifications for sports, so the designations for most schools have changed.  East Cobb's Walton, which reached the Class AAAAA title game and is ranked No. 4 in the Class AAAAAA preseason poll, got a bit of a surprise this week in a scrimmage against Hillgrove of West Cobb…
