No Answer

How difficult it can be to willingly choose to refuse to become defensive. We can learn a lot from Jesus—who not only gives us an example, but also empowers us to walk in victory.

How difficult it can be to willingly choose to refuse to become defensive. Luke 23:5-9 (NIV)5But they insisted, "He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee and has come all the way here."  6On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean. 7When he learned that Jesus was under Herod's jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.  8When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him. From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform some miracle. 9He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer.             In today’s passage, we see that Pilate and Herod—the ones in authority—were pretty …

Let Your Light Shine

What is the purpose of letting our light shine'? To bring the Father honor and praise. Sounds simple enough, right?

"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." Matthew 5:14-16 Growing up, I heard this passage repeated so frequently that I could quote it in my sleep (which is actually a good thing). However, when the reality of ''the challenge of living life' started to take it's toll, the significance of this passage really began to seep in.  Whenever we are in a situation and don't know what to do, it never hurts to look toward Jesus! As a matter of fact, it is the best thing to …

Bethlehem Walk Celebrates the True Spirit of Christmas

Mountain View UMC invites Cobb residents to experience the sights and sounds of the night Jesus was born at Bethlehem Walk 2011 on Dec. 3, 4, 9, and 10.

Mountain View United Methodist Church on Jamerson Road invites everyone to a reenactment of the City of Bethlehem 2,000 years ago on the night Jesus was born at Bethlehem. Each night of Bethlehem Walk is a 2-acre interactive play where visitors can walk through the city’s streets and talk with the potter or the baker. People can see Roman soldiers open the city and watch the changing of the tower guards at the city gates. Visitors can listen as the storyteller weaves tales of the heroes of old and sign the census to show they were there. The annual production involves more than 175 church members and area volunteers who begin setting up the “City of Bethlehem” in the week after Thanksgiving and play the roles of the people who populated …

From Great Weakness to Incredible Power

Church4Chicks founder and teacher Shelley Hendrix shares spiritual wisdom in this new Sunday column.

I feel weak, worn out, and yes, even discouraged today. And, as only my Heavenly Father could do, He brought me back to this post I wrote a couple of years ago. I had completely forgotten I had ever written this. What a sweet Savior, who not only knows our weaknesses, but also delights in standing with us in all of the ups and downs of our daily lives and routines. I don't know what tomorrow holds, but thankfully, the Jesus I read about here in this passage, really is the One who holds my future. And in that reality, I find tremendous hope, and I feel my spirit lifting. Luke 4 (The Message)"Tested by the Devil1-2Now Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, left the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wild. For forty wilderness days and nights…

The Victory Over Death

A mystery revealed in the Resurrection of Christ!

All ancient cultures sought to connect their lives with the natural events they experienced. Hence, ancient peoples like the Greeks saw springtime as a time of renewal and regeneration and sought to explain its existence by mythological stories. The story of Demeter and Persephone, for example, was the result of such an effort. The ancient Hebrews, however, connected springtime with their liberation from Egyptian slavery, a historical event. The feast of the Passover is a remembrance of God’s gift of freedom to the Hebrew people as He brings them out of 400 years of oppressive slavery. That event occurred during the spring at a specific time and was celebrated every year on the 15th day of the Jewish month Nissan. It just so happened that …
