Lassiter, Kell Players Named All-State

The Northeast Cobb schools each had two players honored by the AJC.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's 2012 high school football all-state teams have six players from Northeast Cobb-area schools on them. The newspaper released its lists earlier this week, with separate teams for each of the six classifications of competition, including player and coach of the year. From Class AAAAAA, the quarterback is Eddie Printz of Lassiter, along with his top wide receiver, Willie Police; and offensive lineman Brandon Kublanow of Walton. In Class AAAAAA, Kell defensive backs Brendan Langley and Quincy Mauger have been included, as well as Pope offensive lineman Max Kemper. Included in the honorable mention category are Walton running back Tyren Jones and Wheeler defensive back Allen Artis. Five Northeast Cobb-area …

Longhorns Return to Corky Kell Classic

Kell opens the 2013 season once again against Chattahoochee at the Georgia Dome.

The Kell High School football team learned on Monday that it has been chosen to participate in the Corky Kell Classic And for the second year in a row, the Longhorns will be facing Chattahoochee to kick off the event on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013.  That game starts at 9 a.m. sharp. Kell is named after the late Wheeler coach and Classic namesake Corky Kell. The Longhorns defeated Chattahoochee to start 2012, enroute to a 10-2 season that ended in the second round of the state Class AAAAA playoffs. Kell lost in that game to eventual state champion Gainesville. Kell will be losing some of its key figures, including defensive back Brendan Langley, who will be attending the University of Georgia in the fall.

Honors Continue for Kell's Langley

The Longhorns' football star has been named Cobb defensive player of the year by The Marietta Daily Journal.

Brendan Langley's senior season has been a star-studded one, and among the first of what figure to be many awards are rolling in. On Sunday, the Kell High School defensive back was named the Cobb Defensive Player of the Year by The Marietta Daily Journal. Langley, who had six interceptions on the season, led the Longhorns to a 10-2 record, the Region 7-AAAAA title and a second-round appearance in the Class AAAAA playoffs. “Defensively, he’s a shutdown corner,” Kell coach Derek Cook told the newspaper. “Any ball that’s thrown his way, 50 percent of them he’s going to catch." A 6-foot-1 cornerback, Langley also was busy making his college football plans during the season. After initially saying he would attend the University of South …

Kell Football Routed by Gainesville

The Longhorns lost a halftime lead and were eliminated from the second round of the state playoffs.

The Kell football team was looking good at halftime, as the Longhorns' high-powered offense was rolling at home to build a 35-21 lead over Gainesville. But the Red Elephants put on an offensive showing of their own after that, breaking a 42-42 deadlock enroute to a 61-42 win on Friday in the second round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs. For No. 4-ranked Kell, the early loss was a stunner. Star Brendan Langley, playing in his final game for Kell after committing to UGA earlier this week, caught five touchdown passes.  But the Longhorns had no answer for the Red Elephants' quarterback DeShaun Watson, who scored four of his five rushing touchdowns after halftime. He also threw for three more touchdowns. As Kell coach Derek Cook told The …

No. 1 Lassiter Upset; Walton Also Falls

Wheeler was routed by Grayson and Kell pulled out a win in the final seconds in first round of the Georgia High School football playoffs Friday.

Lassiter's enjoyment of its first No. 1 state ranking ever was brief, and it will hold some bitter memories. After leading 21-0 in the second quarter, the Trojans could get nothing going offensively in the second half of their Class AAAAAA first round state playoff game. Brookwood rallied late in the fourth quarter to send the game to overtime, then kicked a field goal in the extra session to shock previously unbeaten Lassiter 24-21. The Trojans finished one of their best seasons prematurely, with a 10-1 record. But quarterback Eddie Printz and a Lassiter powerful offense were stymied when it mattered the most. In another part of East Cobb, another visiting team from Gwinnett also forced a game into overtime, and with similar results. …

I left the Lassiter/Brookwood game at the end of the 3rd quarter with Lassiter leading 21-6. I commented to a friend as we walked along the fence behind the Lassiter bench about the team laughing and horsing around like they'd already won the game. I'm disappointed in the outcome, but not surprised. Congrats Brookwood.   more ›

Lassiter, Kell Begin Playoff Quests

The top-ranked Trojans and No. 4 Longhorns both play first round games at home tonight.

Brookwood at Lassiter, Friday, 7:30 p.m. For the first time in school history, the Trojans are ranked No. 1 in the state, in the Class AAAAAA poll. But like Walton's game against Parkview, another Gwinnett team with a strong playoff track record is coming to Cobb. Lassiter is 10-0 with its high-powered offense, led by quarterback Eddie Printz and receiver Willie Police, and an opportunistic defense that has come up big when needed (including its regular season win over Walton). Three years ago, the Trojans were also undefeated, then were knocked out in the first round of the playoffs. Southwest DeKalb at Kell, Friday, 7:30 p.m. The Longhorns have had another strong season, and enter the Class AAAAA playoffs ranked No. 4. Their only loss …

Lassiter Enters Playoffs Ranked No. 1

The Trojans begin Class AAAAAA playoff action against Brookwood Friday; Kell now No. 4 in Class AAAAA.

For the first time in its 30-year history, the Lassiter High School football team is ranked No. 1 in the state of Georgia. The Trojans were pushed into the top spot in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Class AAAAAA poll heading into the start of playoff action this weekend. The move results from a loss by previous No. 1 Camden County, coupled with Lassiter's completion of a 10-0 season. Unlike their last perfect regular season in 2009, these Trojans are hoping to go further than the first round. Although Lassiter, which plays host to Brookwood Friday, is 5-0 against teams reaching the playoffs this year, the Trojans are only 6-7 all-time in playoff action. Last year, they reached the Class AAAAA semifinals, losing to Walton. In their only…

Unbeaten Lassiter Likely No. 1 Team

The Trojans finished their regular season a perfect 10-0; see who they and Kell will be playing in the state playoffs next weekend.

Lassiter High School has been perfect before in a football regular season. But this time, the Trojans will enter the state playoffs with an even loftier status than in 2009, when they fell to Colquitt County in the first round after going 10-0. Thanks to Colquitt's stunning win over No. 1 Camden County on Friday, second-ranked Lassiter is expected to take over the top spot in the polls when the Georgia High School Association playoffs begin next weekend. Lassiter, which rolled over Etowah 34-6 on Friday to post a perfect 10-0 regular season, will play host to Brookhaven in the first round.  Here's the complete Class AAAAAA playoff bracket, which also includes Walton, Wheeler, Marietta, North Cobb, Hillgrove and McEachern. Kell High School …

Lassiter Wins 5-AAAAAA Title

The Trojans remain undefeated and Kell crushed Pope to earn the top playoff spot in subregion play on Friday.

The Lassiter Trojans didn't run away with their Region 5-AAAAAA-clinching win over Roswell on Friday. But they maintained their undefeated season and No. 2 Class AAAAAA ranking with a 28-14 win on Senior Night. Lassiter will be the top seed from the region when the playoffs begin in two weeks, and Walton, which defeated Etowah 20-14, is the second seed. The other two spots have yet to be determined. Wheeler improved to 5-4 and 2-4 in region play with a 31-9 win over Woodstock on Friday, keeping alive post-season chances with a week left in the regular season. But in order for the Wildcats to seal the final region playoff spot, they'll need to do more than defeat Cherokee next week.  Etowah (4-5, 3-3), which beat Wheeler, must lose to …
