Sprayberry Falls in State Tourney

Wheeler advanced, but the Walton and Pope boys also lost in basketball action Wednesday.

The Sprayberry High School boys basketball team could not take advantage of home court after winning its first regional title in 23 years. The Yellow Jackets lost their Class AAAAA state championship first-round game by a 56-40 score to Tucker on Wednesday, as just one of eight Northeast Cobb-area teams that qualified advanced. The Wheeler High School boys had little trouble with Dacula Wednesday, winning 71-56 at home to set up a second-round Class AAAAAA game Saturday against Meadowcreek. Tipoff time has not been announced. The Walton High School boys took to the road at Shiloh, and had a 43-33 lead after three quarters. No. 1 Kell Girls Upset in State

The Sprayberry girls also lost in first-round basketball tournament action Tuesday.

The Kell High School girls basketball team didn't have long to enjoy its No. 1 ranking. The day after being voted at the top of the Class AAAAA polls, the Lady Longhorns were shocked by Stephenson on Tuesday in an 60-51 loss in the first round of the Georgia High School Association state tournament. Kell, which was also playing at home, was playing without injured star Caliya Robinson. The Lady Longhorns finished the season with a 22-3 record. Also on Tuesday, the Sprayberry girls fell in their Class AAAAA first round game by a 59-56 score at Southwest DeKalb. According to a Score Atlanta summary of the game, the Lady Yellow Jackets got 28 points from Neena Carter, but couldn't make good on a one-point halftime lead. The Sprayberry boys …

Kell, Sprayberry Win Region Basketball

The Sprayberry girls also have qualified for the state basketball tournament that begins Tuesday.

For the first time in 23 years, the Sprayberry High School boys basketball team has won a region championship. A steal and a layup from Torrey Richardson in the final five seconds of the game lifted the Yellow Jackets to a 58-56 win over Creekview Saturday in the finals of the Region 7-AAAAA tournament at Sprayberry. The Jackets, who are now 19-9 on the season, will play host to Tucker Wednesday in the first round of the Georgia High School Association state tournament. Kell, Sprayberry Girls Advance to State

Regional basketball tournament play is underway.

The Northeast Cobb area will be well-represented in the girls portion of the state high school basketball tournament. Wheeler advanced to the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAAA playoffs with a 61-57 win over Walton Tuesday in the Region 5-AAAAAA tournament at Roswell. The state tournament appearance is the second in a row for the Lady Wildcats, who will play Woodstock in the region semifinals Thursday. The Lassiter girls also were eliminated in a 63-51 loss to Etowah. In Region 7-AAAAAA, Kell, Pope and Sprayberry all won their quarterfinal games Tuesday, meaning they're headed to the Class AAAAA state tournament. Kell, the top seed, beat Riverwood 43-34. Update: Trojans, Lady Longhorns Earn Playoff Berths

Lassiter will open the state basketball tournament at home Saturday against Alpharetta after losing the Region 5-AAAAA title to Wheeler.

Saturday night’s Region 5-AAAAA final between Lassiter and Wheeler ended with the Wildcats claiming a 67-61 victory and a region title. Niles Clark scored 19 points for Lassiter, The Marietta Daily Journal reported. Adam Dowell had 10 points, and Juwan Dickey added eight points and 12 rebounds. The Trojans (13-14) will host Alpharetta, the No. 3 seed from Region 6-AAAAA, in the first round of the Georgia High School Association AAAAA playoffs Saturday. It might be a good omen for Lassiter because the same two schools met in the first round of the GHSA football playoffs in November. Basketball Tourney Results: Hiram Girls Win; Whitefield Falls

Here are the varsity basketball scores from Dec. 21 games for schools in Cobb, Cherokee, Bartow, Paulding and Douglas counties.

The holiday basketball continues, with some of the early tournaments wrapping up Wednesday or setting up Thursday finales. The Hiram Lady Hornets completed a triumphant trip to North Georgia by capturing the championship of the Alfa Insurance Mistletoe Madness at North Murray High with a 40-33 win over Elbert County. The Whitefield Academy boys are coming home from Enterprise, AL, with their first loss of the season after falling to the host school in the championship game of the Enterprise Christmas Tournament, 58-55.
