Home-field advantage paid off for Northeast Cobb high school soccer teams in the first round of the Georgia High School Association playoffs Wednesday. Lassiter's girls, Pope's girls, and Kell's boys and girls all won to extend their seasons. Those home wins came a day after Lassiter's boys won and Pope's boys lost on the road in the GHSA playoffs. Region 5-AAAAA champ Lassiter scored only one goal at home against Alpharetta in the AAAAA tournament, but that's all the Lady Trojans need in a shutout 1-0 win. They'll be home again next Wednesday against Kennesaw Mountain, which beat Camden County, 5-2, on the road. Lassiter is the No. 8 boys soccer team in the nation but needed penalty kicks to survive its opening game of the Georgia High School Association AAAAA playoffs at Milton on Tuesday night. The Trojans and Eagles were tied at 3 after regulation and overtime, according to the scores posted by the GHSA. Lassiter then was a perfect five for five on penalty kicks, while Milton connected on only four of five, giving the Trojans the win. Lassiter advanced to play at Region 4-AAAAA champion North Cobb next Tuesday in the second round. The Warriors beat Islands at home, 8-1. Lassiter opened the soccer season ranked No. 1 in the nation but will start the Georgia High School Association playoffs on the road tonight after finishing third in Region 5-AAAAA. The Trojans play at Milton at 7:30 p.m. in what could be the first of five road games if they want to win the AAAAA boys title a year after losing in the semifinals. The Lady Trojans, on the other hand, are the region champs and will start the AAAAA playoffs at home Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Alpharetta.
