The heart of Georgia could one day have a new stadium, but building one may require a lot of teamwork. The Atlanta Falcons have been in discussion with state officials about a new stadium with a retractable roof to replace the 20-year-old Georgia Dome. Five architectural firms were selected last month as finalists to design the facility, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported. The price tag of the proposed stadium would be an estimated $1 billion, with about $200-300 million of that paid for by public bonds. It’s that remaining portion of the price tag that has put a timeout on the proposed stadium plans. According to Fox 5 Atlanta, Georgia Gov. Kell opens the 2013 season once again against Chattahoochee at the Georgia Dome.

The Kell High School football team learned on Monday that it has been chosen to participate in the Corky Kell Classic And for the second year in a row, the Longhorns will be facing Chattahoochee to kick off the event on Saturday, Aug. 24, 2013. That game starts at 9 a.m. sharp. Kell is named after the late Wheeler coach and Classic namesake Corky Kell. The Longhorns defeated Chattahoochee to start 2012, enroute to a 10-2 season that ended in the second round of the state Class AAAAA playoffs. Kell lost in that game to eventual state champion Gainesville. Kell will be losing some of its key figures, including defensive back Brendan Langley, who will be attending the University of Georgia in the fall.

The start of the high school football season is just a week away, and some of Cobb's best teams are priming for an early spotlight. Teams from East and Northeast Cobb such as Walton, Kell and McEachern will all be playing next Saturday in the Corky Kell Classic at the Georgia Dome. Earlier this week, they all learned, not surprisingly, that they're ranked in the Top 10 in preseason polls. Earlier this year, the Georgia High School Association went from five to six classifications for sports, so the designations for most schools have changed.
