Lassiter, Kell Excel in All-Sports Hunt

Both Northeast Cobb schools finished in the Top 10 in the Georgia Athletic Directors Assocation standings.

High school athletic programs in East Cobb and Northeast Cobb were once again among the best in the state of Georgia. Two schools came close, but couldn't quite finish on top, as the prep sports season ended this weekend with Georgia High School Association baseball playoffs. For the second year in a row, the Walton High School and Pope High School programs finished second in Class AAAAA and Class AAAA, respectively, for the Georgia Athletic Directors Association's Directors Cup honors. Lassiter High School was fourth in Class AAAAA and Kell High School came in ninth in Class AAAA. Lassiter, Pope Lose Lacrosse Titles

The Trojans fall in overtime after a big rally, and the Greyhounds are unable to recover from an early deficit.

Lassiter and Pope came close but lost their championship boys lacrosse games Saturday. Lassiter came back from four goals behind in the third quarter and a two-goal deficit in the final five minutes to force overtime. But Evans Lockwood scored in sudden-death overtime to give Milton the Georgia High School Association AAAAA title, 10-9. Garrett Shank scored four goals for Lassiter, including one with 55 seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 9 after Milton took a 9-7 lead with five minutes left. He also scored the Trojans’ eighth goal. Lassiter trailed 6-3 at halftime and 7-3 early in the third quarter but charged back to tie the score at 7 in front of a frenzied home crowd at The Frank. Pope Whips Decatur in Lacrosse Semis

But the Greyhound baseball team is knocked out by Loganville, 12-2.

Pope's boys lacrosse team is one win from a Georgia High School Association A-AAAA championship after beating Decatur on the road Wednesday night. The Greyhounds scored in the first seven seconds of the game and never trailed on the way to an 11-6 victory. Pope (16-3-1) will play at Lambert in Forsyth County on Saturday for the Georgia title. Pope played ball-control offense Wednesday at Decatur and reeled off the final seven goals of the first half to take an 8-1 lead at intermission. The Bulldogs got off few shots. Decatur scored first in the second half, but Pope netted a goal less than a minute later and added two more in the quarter to lead 11-2 entering the fourth period. Things didn't go as well for the Greyhound baseball team, …

Lassiter, the top seed from Area 2, added to the lead 37 seconds into the second half and shut out Alpharetta, Area 3’s No. 1 seed, in the third quarter for a 10-3 lead going into the fourth. Kell Wins State AAAA Track Title

Devon Williams claims the 110- and 300-meter hurdles to lead the Longhorns, while Michael Newton sets the Georgia 400-meter record to help Sprayberry finish second.

Kell won the Georgia High School Association AAAA state track and field championship, and Sprayberry finished second in a dominant day for Northeast Cobb athletes. It was the best state finish ever for both schools, The Marietta Daily Journal said. Yet another Region 5-AAAA school, Pope, finished fourth despite having no one competing on Day 3 of the meet in Jefferson. Kell was more than a two-man team, but the Longhorns needed only Jordan Chambers and Devon Williams to claim the state title. Chambers won the shot put and discus Thursday, and Williams finished sixth in the long jump to give Kell its first 23 points. That score alone would have placed the Longhorns eighth. But Williams, a senior whose younger sister, Kendell, dominated the …

Lassiter and Kell also have runners in today's GHSA track finals.

Runners from Sprayberry, Kell and Lassiter are chasing state championships this afternoon in Day 3 of the Georgia High School Association’s boys track and field meet in Jefferson. In Friday’s only final, Pope’s Patrick Fleming followed his victory Thursday in the AAAA 1,600 meters by finishing sixth in the 3,200 in 9:35.85. Six Northeast Cobb individuals and one relay team qualified for today’s finals during preliminaries Friday. Sprayberry’s Michael Newton qualified first in the AAAA 400-meter dash in 47.61 seconds, almost half a second slower than his best time of the year but still 0.41 second ahead of anyone else. He also made the 200-meter final, qualifying third in 21.54. Alexander Reese from Lassiter qualified second in the AAAAA …

Lassiter Loses in Soccer, Wins in Lacrosse

Kell's girls lacrosse team is knocked out of the playoffs.

What could have been a dream soccer season for Lassiter’s boys came to a nightmarish end Friday night with a 4-2 loss at Brookwood in the Georgia High School Association AAAAA playoffs. The Broncos scored twice in the final seven minutes to break a tie forged with 10:15 left when junior Will Robinson scored for the Trojans, The Gwinnett Daily Post reported. Lassiter (17-3-1) led 1-0 at halftime on a goal by junior Shaban Abousaud, but Brookwood tied it early in the second half on a penalty kick and took the lead with 17:41 to play on a bad-bounce goal, the Daily Post said. The quarterfinal loss ends a season that started with Lassiter ranked No. 1 in the nation by ESPN. The Trojans were ranked seventh this week, while Brookwood was 21st. …
