Stormy Weather Rolls Through Cobb

Wednesday's tornado killed a man in Bartow County; heavy rains caused accidents and flooding on roads throughout metro Atlanta.

Cobb County, metro Atlanta and most of north and central Georgia were hit with severe weather Wednesday as powerful thunderstorm systems moved quickly through a large portion of the state. Multiple news reports indicate that at least one person in Bartow County was killed because of a tornado; keep up with the latest updates on Cartersville Patch. The Georgia State Patrol confirmed that a tornado touched down and significant damage was sustained in the Bartow community of Adairsville on Wednesday morning, and that traffic on Interstate 75 was shut down in both directions in that area. Gov. Nathan Deal declared a state of emergency in Bartow and Gordon County, where eight people were reported injured. Cobb also was under a severe …

Wind Advisory for North Georgia

Severe storms and heavy rainfall are possible as a strong storm system and cold front move across north and central Georgia.

Strong winds are expected to develop as a storm system and cold front move into the metro Atlanta area Wednesday. In effect until 7 p.m. Wednesday, a wind advisory for north and central Georgia, including Cobb County, warns of 15 to 25 mph winds with gusts up to 35 mph, which make driving difficult. "Showers and a few thunderstorms will accompany these winds, but it should be noted that very strong winds will be possible outside of any shower or thunderstorm activity as well," the advisory says. "Recent rains and the additional heavy rainfall anticipated from this system will allow for trees to be uprooted with greater ease." A squall line capable of producing widespread damaging winds and isolated tornadoes is expected to cross the area …

Snow, Accumulations Possible Thursday

Rain across north Georgia may turn to snow with the arrival of a deep cold air mass.

Cobb County could get its first snow of the winter and 2013 on Thursday night, according to the National Weather Service. A strong low pressure system and ample Gulf moisture will meet, resulting in widespread rain and an associated deep cold air mass that will begin to spread across north and central Georgia on Thursday afternoon and evening, meteorologists say in a special weather statement issued today. As a result, rain could change over to snow across parts of north Georgia, including Cobb. Despite recent unseasonably warm temps, residents could see some light accumulations of snow across parts of north Georgia by mid to late Thursday afternoon or evening, mainly on elevated and grassy surfaces. While folks as far south as a LaGrange-…

Effective from 2 a.m. to 9 a.m. Friday, the advisory warns temperatures could dip into the low 30s and frost can be expected overnight. "Cool, dry pressure will continue to build in the area into Friday, resulting in clear skies and light winds," the warning says. "Temperatures overnight will drop into the mid 30s across north and central Georgia and into the low 30s in the northern and western portions of the state." 300 Tons of De-Icing Mixture Used on Cobb Roads

The county lacks scrapers for the front of its plow trucks.

Most roads in Cobb County have been encased with sheets of ice the past couple of days, leaving residents to wonder when the roads will be clear. Cobb Department of Transportation crews have spread a sand-salt-gravel mixture on major thoroughfares, but subdivision and side streets are untouched. The county used 300 tons of the mixture by Tuesday morning, with more loads arriving from the Vulcan Materials plant near McCollum Airport, according to county road maintenance manager Bill Shelton. Residents may see a plow truck spreading the de-icing mixture but not plowing. The county does not have scrapers to use on the plow trucks, Shelton said. If you need to make a roadwork request or report a pothole, call the county at 770-528-3666. Cobb …

I spoke to Bill Shelton and this guy doesn't have a clue as to where he is even at most of the time! I stopped on of their trucks and the guys looked worn out but they didn't seem to have a clue as to what direction they were headed in their clean up effort...I called DOT and they had no clue what was going on! I think they have a lot to learn from this storm and their lack of management! We …   more ›
