Cobb Gets 'The Onion' Treatment

The satirical site Friday featured a fictitious story about a "Cobb County Evangelical Hospital" that holds a "Gay Cureness Walk."

Cobb County's been in America's cultural crosshairs before, as Cobb Commission Chairman Tim Lee recalled this week in his re-election battle against Bill Byrne.  On Friday, the satirical newspaper and website The Onion had fun at Cobb's expense in an article and video devoted to the same topic as a nearly 20-year-old episode that Lee referenced -- homosexuality.  In a fictitious story on its website that includes a Marietta dateline, The Onion wrote about efforts by a "Cobb County Evangelical Hospital" that holds an annual "Gay Cureness Walk." The money raised will be used to build a new gayness treatment center at the hospital. The accompanying video "interviews" include a physician at the hospital, as well as a supposedly "cured" gay man…

East Cobb POV: Tim Langley

Anti-Cobb Bias and the ASO

Does week's decision affecting the Walton and Lassiter choruses have its roots in what Tim Lee said about TSPLOST?

Did Tim Lee cause the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus to snub the Walton High School and Lassiter High School choral programs? Why would I ask such a preposterous question? After years of routine inclusion, the ASO Chorus has excluded these two outstanding choral programs. Granted, the ASO has come back and "clarified" its action. Apparently it didn't REALLY mean Walton and Lassiter were not "diverse" enough, it just wants to "include" a school from the inner city.  Still, the original statement is usually the closest to the truth and everything else is spin or CYA. If you've been around long enough, you know of the love/hate relationship between Atlanta proper and its suburban neighbors, especially Cobb County. They love our money and …

By your logic, the American Revolution must have been racially motivated, right? The "candor" for which you've applauded Tim Lee was also apologized for.... by Tim Lee....the next day. Perhaps he didn't hear your applause. Next time, clap louder.   more ›

TSPLOST and Metro Atlanta 'Cooperation'

It's time to refocus on Cobb County and Cobb Countians, for improving our community will improve metro Atlanta.

OK. This will be my last mention of the upcoming TSPLOST vote on July 31. Throughout the whole campaign for the TSPLOST, we've been told that regional cooperation is needed in order for all of us to prosper and thrive. In other words, those of us living "outside the perimeter" should buck up and vote in favor of TSPLOST because if we don't, it could mean lost jobs and economic development opportunities. To which I say "Baloney!" Just this week, the cable TV business network CNBC rated Georgia as the 9th best state in the country for business partly BECAUSE of infrastructure and transportation. If we did that well given our "massive traffic congestion" do we need to spend another $8 billion on many projects of dubious benefit? I've said it …

I vote "NO" on TSPLOST. Atlanta has failed its citizens in its shortsightedness on so many levels. There is no up side to this 1% other than to shore up Atlanta's failings . Atlanta never prepared for the last thirty years and I will judge Atlanta on what they have done or not done in the past because that truly lets you know what is going to happen in their future.   more ›

Car Tax Changes Everyone Must Know

The Georgia General Assembly passed a tax reform bill that will change how and when you pay your ad valorem tax on your vehicle.

The good news is the "birthday tax" we've all been paying when we renew our car tags has been eliminated -- well, sort of. It only affects vehicles purchased after March 1, 2013. During this year's legislative session, the Georgia General Assembly passed a tax reform bill that removes the sales tax and ad valorem tax on newly-purchased vehicles. However, there are new taxes to pay -- after March 1, 2013 a new title ad valorem tax fee of 6.5 percent in 2013 and 6.75 percent in 2014 will be added (for vehicles purchased after the first day of March next year). The new law affects both brand new vehicles and previously-owned vehicles because the tax isn't paid annually only when a vehicle is purchased. The Cobb County Tax Commissioner's …

Gravitt Rescue Fund Exceeds $8K

The money raised to care for a dog injured on I-75 has paid for his surgical bills.

The Marietta woman who helped rescue a dog hit by a tractor-trailer on Interstate 75 asked for public donations to help pay for his recovery.  Northeast Cobb Patch talked to Dana Wachsmann in April about her fundraising efforts for Gravitt, a likely stray who was named after the Marietta Police officer who rushed the animal to emergency veterinary care.  Several operations, including surgery to reattach the dog's pelvis to its spine, came to an estimated $7,500. Wachsmann contacted Patch this week to report that more than $8,000 in donations has been received for Gravitt's medical care. She also said that Marietta resident Deann Seckinger and her family, which took in the dog on a temporary basis, will be giving Gravitt a permanent home …
