Law enforcement agencies are assisting with patrols in the aftermath of the Connecticut school shootings.
Cobb County School District officials spent a busy weekend requesting law enforcement assistance and briefing school principals, teachers and staff about security measures in the wake of Friday's deadly school shootings in Newtown, Conn. On Monday, Cobb County police and law enforcement from other Cobb cities made safety rounds at schools. "Our precinct patrol officers are driving by all schools in their assigned beats," Cobb Police Department Spokesman Officer Michael Bowman told Patch. The Cobb County Board of Commissioners is expected to vote to approve the purchase of eleven new vehicles for the Cobb County Police Department during their Tuesday morning meeting. This is the first major vehicle buying proposal since the economy entered its downturn; in healthier financial times, the county would replace old and maintenance-heavy vehicles yearly. For the past four years, Cobb's police cars have had to soldier on with limited circulation of new vehicles. A typical police car is driven 96,000 miles a year, according to the county's public meeting agenda. One man was killed in a traffic accident on Interstate 75 North near Barrett Parkway that saw significant traffic delays for commuters on Monday afternoon. According to Cobb County Police Sgt. Dana Pierce, at 4:14 p.m. Monday the driver of a car on Interstate 75 north at Barrett Parkway was being assisted by a HERO unit. Pierce said that the driver of the vehicle suffered a "medical issue" which caused him to leave the interstate. The car drove off I-75 and landed in a ravine, where it caught fire. The driver, the lone occupant of the vehicle, was killed. The accident brought six lanes of traffic on Barrett Parkway to a halt and caused significant gridlock on Interstate 75.

Update (12 a.m. Friday): According to Cobb Police, the man who was arrested outside the home on Jamerson Forest Circle was the man who called 911. "He did call 911. We do not know the relationship between him and the deceased female inside the residence," Sgt. Dana Pierce said to FOX 5 Atlanta. Update (11 p.m.): According to FOX 5 Atlanta, one person was taken into custody in the aftermath of the shooting. Additionally, the victim has been identified as a female. Cobb County Police are responding to a fatal shooting that was reported on Jamerson Forest Circle in East Cobb County. Cobb PIO Sgt. Dana Pierce is en route to the scene. Fishermen discovered a man in the water near an Akers Mill Road Apartment complex; police are investigating as a homicide.
Cobb County police are asking for the public’s help to identify a body two fly fishermen discovered in the Chattahoochee River near an Akers Mill apartment complex around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday. The Crimes Against Persons Unit is investigating the case, as it is believed to be a homicide. Police describe the victim as a black male about 5’10” with numerous tattoos. Update (8:00 a.m., Tuesday): According to a news release from the Cobb County Police Department, Damian Cornell Purdue McElrath has been charged with aggravated assault and murder in the death of Diane McElrath. Update (10:25 p.m.): The victim has been identified as 58-year-old Diane McElrath. Her son, Damian Cornell Purdue McElrath, 18, has been charged with murder and aggravated assault. The deadline to register for Cobb's next Citizens Public Safety Academy is Friday, July 20. This program provides an opportunity for citizens to get an inside look at the Cobb Department of Public Safety's three units: fire, police, and the emergency communications center. Classes for the free 13-week program are held every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m., and the location changes from week to week depending on what is being discussed or introduced to the class. The fall session is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, Sept. 4. Applicants must be 21 years old and residents of Cobb County or work for Cobb County government. A 43-year-old Marietta woman was arrested Monday afternoon in Kennesaw on charges that she stole nearly $1 million from her East Cobb employer. Angela Lynn Williamson of the 2200 block of Sessions Street in Marietta faces 11 felony counts of theft by taking and is being held on $900,000 bond, according to Cobb County jail records. The May 16 warrant against her indicates that the thefts began in September 2001 and continued into 2011. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Williamson is accused of writing herself as many as 57 checks a year on the business accounts of employer InterContinental Marble, which is in the 2200 block of Northwest Parkway in East Cobb.
