In 2011, eight people were killed in traffic crashes in Georgia between Christmas and New Years Day, and 401 people were arrested for driving under the influence. There is no question that the holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year, from shopping for that perfect gift to attending countless celebrations with family, friends and co-workers. This year the Christmas holiday travel period started 6 p.m. on Friday and will end Tuesday night, Dec. 25. The streets of downtown Acworth are expected to be filled with thousands of people Friday night for Santa's Arrival, a community tradition for more than 10 years. The City of Kennesaw is partnering with local faith-based and civic organizations in a Christmas outreach initiative called HOPE City Project. The project will collect clothing items, toys and small electronics and provide them to people in the need in our community. For the next three weeks, new and gently worn clothes, shoes, purses, toys and small electronics can be dropped off at various locations around the city. On Saturday, December 22, community members of all ages who are having difficulty making ends meet are invited to the Martha J. Moore Center, 6697 Keene St., to select five free items. Do you plan to spend more on holiday gifts this year? If you’re the average shopper, one survey says you probably will.
If you’re the average shopper, chances are you may be spending a bit more on gifts this season than in years past. Earlier this month, American Research Group reported that its phone survey earlier this month showed that Americans plan to spend an average of $854 on gifts this holiday season, up nearly a third of last year’s average of $646. That’s also the highest average since ARG’s 2007 survey, when survey respondents’ average was $859—that amount fell by about half in 2008.
