Giving Tuesday: A Chance to Give Back During the Holiday Season

Atlanta-based CARE, Habitat for Humanity and Project GRAD Atlanta are among the nonprofits trying to encourage people to pause in their shopping and find a way to assist others.

Will donating to charity ever be as popular as shopping during the holiday season? A partnership of nonprofits hopes so. For many people, the holiday shopping rush began on Thanksgiving day, with some national chains opening their doors just hours after the traditional turkey dinner. Then comes Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, and Cyber Monday, which has morphed into Cyber Week. Now, there's a new campaign asking you to open your wallet _ Giving Tuesday. The Giving Tuesday website says the effort, coming on the heels of days devoted to consumerism, was started "to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season. It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations." …

Holiday Spotlight: Thanksgiving Gobble Jog

Enjoy music, exercise and Thanksgiving fun while helping fight poverty at MUST Ministries' 10th annual Gobble Jog.

This week's Cobb, Douglas and Paulding Weekend & Community Spotlight features the 10th Annual Gobble Jog by Marietta-based MUST Ministries. The  road race on Thanksgiving morning raises money to fight poverty. This year’s theme, “It’s kind of a big deal,” heralds the Nov. 22 event that will hopefully attract 10,000 runners, building on last year’s 9,453 attendees. Proceeds from the race help MUST Ministries provide 34,000 individuals each year with food, shelter, education and employment opportunities, clothing and access to healthcare to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness and foster long-term change. Visit Patch's Event Calendar for more details on the Gobble Jog and how to register. Got a great event coming up in your community…

McCleskey Middle School Coat and Food Drive

Help McCleskey Middle School provide coats and non-perishable food to local charities.

McCleskey Middle School is supporting Vining's Church annual Coats for Kids project. The project provides needed coats for underprivileged children across the county. The project works like this: there will be a large red box located outside McCleskey's front office for children and parents to place gently used coats for children of any age (toddler to teenager). The box will be picked up on regularly scheduled dates and taken to a Vining's Church distribution location. The coat collection continues until Jan. 15. The coats will be distributed to kids on three separate dates: Dec. 1, Dec. 15 and Jan. 15.  Last year over 2,000 coats were given to needy children. Vining's Church is working with approximately 25 Cobb County schools and 25 …

The Center for Family Resources 26th Annual Thanks for Giving

Join a food distribution program that will provide 1,500 Cobb needy families with boxes of food items needed to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal at home.

The Center for Family Resources (CFR) has been providing Thanksgiving boxes to families in need in Cobb County for 26 years. As families prepare for a holiday with loved ones surrounding a Thanksgiving feast, many of our Cobb neighbors must stretch their budgets, making it difficult to afford a Thanksgiving meal for their families.  It will take nearly 70,000 food items to ensure every family served will receive everything they need for Thanksgiving. The coordination of Thanks for Giving 2011 would not be possible without the support of local individuals, schools, businesses and civic organizations. CFR relies entirely on these groups to make the Thanksgiving food distribution possible. Please consider helping the effort by hosting a food …
