Honors Continue for Kell's Langley

The Longhorns' football star has been named Cobb defensive player of the year by The Marietta Daily Journal.

Brendan Langley's senior season has been a star-studded one, and among the first of what figure to be many awards are rolling in. On Sunday, the Kell High School defensive back was named the Cobb Defensive Player of the Year by The Marietta Daily Journal. Langley, who had six interceptions on the season, led the Longhorns to a 10-2 record, the Region 7-AAAAA title and a second-round appearance in the Class AAAAA playoffs. “Defensively, he’s a shutdown corner,” Kell coach Derek Cook told the newspaper. “Any ball that’s thrown his way, 50 percent of them he’s going to catch." A 6-foot-1 cornerback, Langley also was busy making his college football plans during the season. After initially saying he would attend the University of South …

Kell Star Switches to UGA

Defensive back Brendan Langley says he'll sign with the Bulldogs, after originally committing to South Carolina.

Kell High School continues play in the state football playoffs in a home game against Gainesville on Friday.  But on Tuesday, one of its star players sorted out his long-term future by changing his mind about where he'll play college football. Defensive back Brendan Langley offered a verbal commitment to the Georgia Bulldogs, choosing one SEC school over another. Langley, who also has contributed to Kell as a running back and wide receiver this season, initially chose South Carolina.  But in an interview in Wednesday's edition of The Marietta Daily Journal, Kell coach Derek Cook said Langley had his heart set on Georgia all along.  “South Carolina didn’t push him away. I’ve had other kids go to South Carolina, and it’s a very good school, …

Kell Cornerback Langley Commits to Gamecocks

Langley verbally committed to South Carolina on Wednesday, and will be playing against current teammate and future Georgia commit Quincy Mauger.

Kell High School's football duo of Brendan Langley and Quincy Mauger had hoped to play in the same backfield at the collegiate level, continuing their legacy of excellent football together. These dreams will not come true, as Langley verbally committed to the University of South Carolina on Wednesday.  The 6'1", 187 lb Langley said in a press release: "Special thanks to the Kell High School community who is always supportive of our program in supporting our fundraisers and attending our friday night games. And to Natarvis Chang, my head coach Derek Cook, Eric Burke, and Fabian Stone, who all mentored me throughout this process and kept me level headed. There’s no football like Kell Football"  Mauger surprised his own mother with his …

Kell Football Safety Mauger Commits to UGA

The Longhorns' safety decided in secret last week to play for UGA.

In a move that was meant to surprise his mother, Kell High School football safety Quincy Mauger announced his verbal commitment to the University of Georgia Bulldogs before the start of the school's prospect camp on Friday. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Mauger had picked Georgia over the University of Central Florida last week, but kept his decision close to the vest until the announcement just before the annual "Dawg Night" camp. “I picked Georgia because it has everything I need to be successful with academics and on the football. It’s a great opportunity, and I took it,” said Mauger in the AJC. It remains to be seen whether or not Mauger's decision will influence Brendan Langley, who is also attending the camp despite …

Kell Cornerback Says UGA is No.4 Choice

It's not entirely clear what bumped the Dawgs out of Brendan Langley's top spot.

University of Georgia football fans who were looking forward to Kell High School star cornerback and wide receiver Brendan Langley donning a Bulldog cap on National Signing Day may be in for a disappointment. “I had a little bit of a misunderstanding with Georgia but it’s already been cleared up for a while now,” Langley told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Sunday.  Despite making amends with UGA, Langley has dropped the Dawgs to number four on his list of favorite colleges. The decision, made earlier this month, puts fierce SEC rivals Alabama, Tennessee and South Carolina in the top three and knocks the Dawgs out of their previous number one spot. UGA did earn some points with Langley for offering a scholarship to Kell cornerback and …

Saban Pursues Brendan Langley

The Alabama head coach loves to collect elite defensive backs, and the Kell junior is on his list.

Alabama football coach Nick Saban wants Kell defensive back Brendan Langley to don crimson come fall 2013, al.com reports, and when it comes to recruiting, especially defensive backs, Saban usually gets what he wants. Langley, fresh off his eighth-place finish in the state AAAA 100-meter dash, has earned a ranking among the top 20 in the nation at his position in the Class of 2013. The Longhorn multisport star is a high priority for Saban, al.com says, and he has Alabama in his top three schools, along with Georgia and Tennessee. College coaches won't get to see Langley and the rest of the Longhorns in action that counts until Aug. 25 in the Corky Kell Classic against Chattahoochee. But spring practice culminates Thursday at 6 p.m. with …

Kell's Langley Rated 19th in Nation

Nebraska is the latest big-time college football program to offer the junior cornerback a scholarship.

Kell junior Brendan Langley is drawing attention across the Southeast and beyond as one of the top defensive football recruits in the nation in the class of 2013. Rivals announced Monday that it rates Langley as the country’s 19th-best cornerback in his class and considers him a four-star recruit. "Langley is a well-built cornerback that has terrific length and is a very good all-around athlete," Rivals recruiting analyst Keith Niebuhr said. "He knows how to use his size and strength well in coverage and does a nice job making a play on the ball. He reacts quickly in the secondary and possesses extremely good closing speed." That ability has earned Langley scholarship offers from most of the SEC, including national champion Alabama and …
