You're invited to attend the upcoming public meetings held by the Cobb Alcohol Taskforce.
Residents have the opportunity to get involved and learn about how to reduce underage drinking in their communities at the Cobb Alcohol Taskforce general meeting on Tuesday, May 7. The event will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Cobb Sheriff's Work Release Center, 1825 County Services Parkway, Marietta. Discussion will include the taskforce's strategies and plans in tackling underage and youth binge drinking throughout Cobb County. Beverages will be provided, and attendees are invited to bring a sack lunch. Cobb Alcohol Taskforce, founded in 1999, is an alliance of individuals and organizations with the mission to reduce underage and youth binge drinking in Cobb by advancing strategic enforcement, policy and education goals.

The Cobb Alcohol Taskforce teams up with civic organizations and the government to help reduce underage drinking.
The Cobb Alcohol Taskforce is conducting a community survey to help identify effective strategies to reduce underage and youth binge drinking. More than 2,000 participants from Acworth, Austell, Kennesaw, Marietta, Powder Springs, Smyrna and unincorporated Cobb County are needed by Sept. 30. A similar survey was previously conducted in 2009 as a requirement of the Sober Truth On Preventing Underage Drinking (STOP) Grant. The Cobb Alcohol Taskforce is marking National Alcohol Awareness Month tonight with a public forum on the damaging effects of underage and youth binge drinking and what we can do to solve the problem. You can join the event from 7 to 8:30 in the second-floor boardroom at the Cobb County government building at 100 Cherokee St. But if you can't make it to Marietta Square, follow the forum live here on Patch. The Cobb Alcohol Taskforce will provide underage drinking prevention information at the Northeast Cobb Transfiguration Health Fair.
The Cobb Alcohol Taskforce will be one of 25 venues at the free community health fair Saturday at Transfiguration Catholic Church. The taskforce will present facts about underage drinking’s impact on brain development, information about social host/teen party ordinances and the Cobb Safe Neighborhoods Safe Homes – a campaign that asks Cobb County residents to agree to six common sense safety steps to help adults keep youth safe by reducing their access to alcohol. Youth use alcohol four times more than all other drugs combined. Alcohol is involved in the top three causes of death for people under 21: homicide, suicide and accidental injury. From high school tailgate parties, proms and college frat parties, binge drinking has become a common risk behavior among youth. Learn how to identify the symptoms of binge drinking and talk with your kids.
The acceptance of social drinking has gone awry. Binge drinking has increased over the last 15 years in the adult population. The expression “do as I say and not as I do” doesn’t hold tonic water. Some good news is that the rates of binge drinking have decreased for boys. From 1993 to 2009, the rate was 48 percent and fell to 41.8 percent but binge drinking has increased in girls. These rates are still too high for both genders. Here are some facts about teenage drinking: 1. In 2009, 10.4 million children aged 12-20 reported drinking in the last month before they were interviewed (CDC, 2010). 2. 79,000 deaths annually are related directly to alcohol with half of these deaths occurring from binge drinking. When will you people take the time to check out the Chevron on the corner of Jim Ownes and Cobb Parkway. Time and time again I have seen sales to those under 21 years of age and no one seems to want to step in and stop it. More goes on there then I will be posting here but all I ask the task force to do is check the place out and they will find out what I have been talking about. more ›
