Top Honors for Northeast Cobb Athletes

Jimmy Yoder of Lassiter and Kendell Williams of Kell have been named among the best in the state.

When he packs up and heads to Stanford University this fall, Jimmy Yoder will be able to add one more designation to a very long list of accomplishments.

Yoder, a recent Lassiter High School graduate, has been named the top male prep swimmer in Georgia by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, which rolled out its sport-by-sport honor roll on Friday.

The top female track and field athlete on the list is Kell High School's Kendell Williams, who completed her high school career with three state championships.

Yoder leaves Lassiter as one of the school's most decorated athletes in any sport. As a senior, he won four state championships and guided the Trojans to a third-place finish in the Georgia High School Association Class AAAAAA state meet.

His victory in the 100-meter butterly also set a state record (48.55 seconds). When he committed to compete at Stanford, a swimming website called Yoder "the first big verbal" for coach Ted Knapp.

The Cardinal finished 7th in the NCAA championships this season.

Earlier this spring, The Marietta Daily Journal named Yoder its male swimmer of the year after he helped establish multiple records in county events.

Williams, who totalled 11 state championships at Kell, also is rated the top incoming track and field prospect at the University of Georgia, where her brother Devon also is an athlete.

"Kendell has what it takes to be as good as Jackie Joyner-Kersee," Georgia assistant coach Petros Kyprianou said in reference to the U.S. Olympic gold medal-winning pentathlete.
