Sprayberry Qualifies 1st in 2 State Races

Lassiter and Kell also have runners in today's GHSA track finals.

Runners from , and are chasing state championships this afternoon in Day 3 of the Georgia High School Association’s boys track and field meet in Jefferson.

In Friday’s only final, Patrick Fleming followed his by finishing sixth in the 3,200 in 9:35.85.

Six Northeast Cobb individuals and one relay team qualified for today’s finals during preliminaries Friday.

Sprayberry’s Michael Newton qualified first in the AAAA 400-meter dash in 47.61 seconds, almost half a second slower than his best time of the year but still 0.41 second ahead of anyone else. He also made the 200-meter final, qualifying third in 21.54.

Alexander Reese from Lassiter qualified second in the AAAAA 400 meters at 48.47 but missed the 200-meter final, finishing 10th in 22.12.

Kell’s Brendan Langley just qualified for the 100-meter final at AAAA. His time of 11.23 seconds was only 10th-best, but he made the final because he battled a stronger wind than two runners dealt with in the other heat.

He was not as lucky in the 200-meter prelims, finishing 12th in 22.30 to miss the final.

Kell has two runners in the AAAA 110-meter hurdles. Devon Williams qualified first in 14.31, and Quincy Mauger was seventh at 14.98. Sprayberry’s Tye Richardson also made the final, qualifying fourth in 14.74.

Richardson also made the final of the 300-meter hurdles, winning his heat in 38.27. Williams is joining him after finishing second in the other heat in 37.94. Kell’s Jordan Jackson missed the final by 0.04 second.

Sprayberry is the top seed in the finale of the AAAA meet, the 4x400 relay. The Yellow Jacket team of Newton, Richardson, Patrick Dubois and Willy Dorcin qualified first in 3:19.81.

Kell’s Williams, Langley, Jackson and Caprii Knighten finished 10th in the prelims in 3:22.06 to miss the final.

Lassiter’s 4x400 team of Reese, Matthew Chaney, Ike Willis and Sean Desantis also missed the AAAAA final, finishing 14th in 3:25.96.
