Lassiter, Kell, Sprayberry Pursue State Titles

The spring high school sports postseason is in full swing in Northeast Cobb this week. Here’s what’s on the local Georgia High School Association schedule.

Baseball

The Sweet 16 features best-of-three series that begin with doubleheaders Wednesday.

will be home against in the AAAAA playoffs, starting at 5 p.m. If neither team sweeps Wednesday, they’ll be back at Lassiter at 5:30 p.m. Thursday for the third game.

will be home against Northgate in the AAAA playoffs, with the first pitch Wednesday at 5 p.m. If the third game is needed, it will start at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Golf

The 5-AAAAA champion Lassiter boys and 5-AAAA champion boys are competing today in the state championships in Augusta, along with John Sterrett among the AAAA boys and Kell’s Holly Haller among the AAAA girls.

Lacrosse

Lassiter is the No. 1 seed from Area 2 in the AAAAA boys playoffs and opens at home at 7 p.m. Tuesday against , Area 3’s fourth seed. If the Trojans win, they’ll be home again Friday in the quarterfinals against East Coweta or .

In the A-AAAA playoffs, Area 2 second seed Pope is home for Round 1 against at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. If the Greyhounds win, they’ll play Saturday at if Lovett wins and at home if Lovett loses Wednesday.

In the AAAAA girls playoffs, Lassiter opens at home at 8 p.m. Wednesday against . With a victory, the Lady Trojans, the second seed from Area 2, will play the Harrison-Grayson winner Saturday, either at Harrison or home to Grayson.

Kell, Sprayberry and Pope all made the A-AAAA playoffs from Area 2.

Second-seeded Kell opens at home Tuesday at 6 p.m. against , with the winner playing McIntosh or Decatur in the quarterfinals Friday.

Third-seeded Pope hits the road to play at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, hoping to advance to play or Lovett on Friday.

No. 4 seed Sprayberry plays at at 7 p.m. Tuesday. With a win, the Lady Jackets will travel to or Woodward on Friday.

Soccer

The Lassiter Trojans play in the Sweet 16 of the AAAAA boys playoffs Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at . If the Trojans win, they’ll play at or at Newnan in the quarterfinals Friday.

At the AAAA level, Kell is home against Starr’s Mill at 8 p.m. Tuesday; fans are asked to wear white for a stadium white-out. If the Longhorns win, they’ll stay home Friday to play Houston County or Northwest Whitfield.

For the girls, Lassiter is home against at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the AAAAA playoffs. If they win, the Lady Trojans will be home again Saturday against Lowndes or .

In the AAAA playoffs, Kell plays at Whitewater at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, hoping to earn a quarterfinal game Saturday either at Chattahoochee or home against Wayne County.

Pope is home Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. against McIntosh. A win will keep the Lady Greyhounds home Saturday against Lee County or Heritage-Conyers.

Tennis

The Lassiter boys play at home Tuesday against in the quarterfinals of the AAAAA tournament after beating Collins Hill, 3-1, last week. The winner will play North Cobb in the semifinals Friday in Clayton County.

The season is over for all other Northeast Cobb teams.

Boys Track and Field

Lassiter has two individuals and a relay team competing in the AAAAA level at the state meet in Jefferson from Thursday to Saturday.

Alex Mattle is competing in the shot put Thursday. Alexander Reese is running in the 200- and 400-meter dashes, with the preliminaries Friday and the finals Saturday. The 4x400-meter relay team is on the same Friday-Saturday schedule; the possible Trojan runners are Reese, Matthew Chaney, Ike Willis, Sean Desantis, Kene Orjioke and Robert Dowling.

Kell is bringing a bigger team to Jefferson for the AAAA meet:

  • Jordan Chambers is competing in shot put and discus Thursday, and Chris Gaines also is in the shot put.
  • Devon Williams is jumping in the long jump and running the 110- and 300-meter hurdles, joined by Jordan Jackson in the 300 hurdles.
  • Quincy Mauger is in the triple jump and the 110-meter hurdles.
  • Brendan Langley is sprinting in the 100- and 200-meter races.
  • A quartet from Williams, Jackson, Langley, Mauger, Julian Burris and Caprii Knighten will run the 4x400-meter relay.

All of Sprayberry’s action will be on the track. Michael Newton will run 200 and 400 meters, and Tye Richardson will hit the hurdles at 110 and 300 meters. Newton and Richardson will team with Willy Dorcin, Patrick Dubois and Shon Melton in the 4x400 relay.

While Sprayberry’s athletes will start with preliminaries Friday and hope to make Saturday’s finals, Pope’s athletes will be done with the meet by Friday.

On Thursday, Austin Card (high jump), Myles Everett (long jump), Nick Tuz (pole vault), Marco Vahoua (discus and shot put) and Patrick Fleming (1,600 meters) will compete, and Fleming will return to the track Friday for the 3,200 meters.

In the girls meet over the weekend, Kell's Kendell Williams and Lassiter's Marcie Merriman .
