Lassiter Enters Playoffs Ranked No. 1

The Trojans begin Class AAAAAA playoff action against Brookwood Friday; Kell now No. 4 in Class AAAAA.

For the first time in its 30-year history, the Lassiter High School football team is ranked No. 1 in the state of Georgia.

The Trojans were pushed into the top spot in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's Class AAAAAA poll heading into the start of playoff action this weekend.

The move results from a loss by previous No. 1 Camden County, coupled with Lassiter's completion of a 10-0 season.

Unlike their last perfect regular season in 2009, these Trojans are hoping to go further than the first round.

Although Lassiter, which plays host to Brookwood Friday, is 5-0 against teams reaching the playoffs this year, the Trojans are only 6-7 all-time in playoff action.

Last year, they reached the Class AAAAA semifinals, losing to Walton.

In their only previous meeting, Lassiter defeated Brookwood 14-6 in the 2011 Corky Kell Classic. Ironically, the Broncos were ranked No. 1 at the start of last season and were the defending state champions.

The Score Atlanta weekly poll still has Camden County ranked No. 1 with Lassiter second.

Kell High School moved up to No. 4 in the AJC and Score Atlanta Class AAAAA polls. The 9-1 Longhorns, whose only loss has been to Lassiter, also is at home to start the playoffs, facing Southwest DeKalb on Friday.
