Update: Trojans, Lady Longhorns Earn Playoff Berths

Lassiter will open the state basketball tournament at home Saturday against Alpharetta after losing the Region 5-AAAAA title to Wheeler.

Saturday night’s Region 5-AAAAA final between Lassiter and Wheeler ended with the Wildcats claiming a 67-61 victory and a region title.

Niles Clark scored 19 points for Lassiter, The Marietta Daily Journal reported. Adam Dowell had 10 points, and Juwan Dickey added eight points and 12 rebounds.

The Trojans (13-14) will host Alpharetta, the No. 3 seed from Region 6-AAAAA, in the first round of the Georgia High School Association AAAAA playoffs Saturday.

It might be a good omen for Lassiter because the same two schools met in the first round of the GHSA football playoffs in November. The Trojans, including Clark and Dickey, won that game in overtime, 17-16.

If Lassiter wins, the next game will be Feb. 29, either home against Dacula or at Peachtree Ridge.

Wheeler (16-10) will be home Saturday night against the No. 4 seed from Region 6-AAAAA, Northview.

Meanwhile, the Kell girls will enter the AAAA playoffs as the No. 2 seed from Region 5-AAAA.

The Lady Longhorns will be home Friday night at 7:30 against Southwest DeKalb, the third seed from Region 6-AAAA. If they win, they'll face either Clarke Central at home or Creekview on the road the following Tuesday.
