A Midsummer's Kell Football Update

The Longhorns will start their season in the Georgia Dome in just a few weeks.

It's not too soon to start thinking about high school football, is it?

Only six weeks remain before several East Cobb area teams will kick off the season in the Georgia Dome.

The Kell High School Longhorns will once again be one of those teams getting an early jump. On Aug. 24, the Longhorns will meet Chattahoochee in the Corky Kell Classic, and in prime time -- at 7:30 p.m.

After being ousted from the state Class AAAAA playoffs in the second round, coach Derek Cook and his team will be aiming for a longer run.

As this midsummer preview from Score Atlanta explains, Cook has had five strong years under his belt, but believes the Longhorns are capable of some special things.

One of his top players, Tyler Henkle, recently announced he would be part of the new football program at Kennesaw State University.

On Aug. 14, the East Cobb Area Council of the Cobb Chamber of Commerce will hold its annual Pigskin Preview breakfast at Indian Hills Country Club.

In addition to Cook, the other coaches include Billy Shackelford of Sprayberry, Jep Irwin of Lassiter, Matt Kemper of Pope, Rocky Hidalgo of Walton and Mike Collins of Wheeler.
