What's Brewing in the Addison Science Lab
Students are studying the effects of light on crickets, sound, lenses and prisms, soil attributes, and animal adaptations in the Addison Elementary's science lab.
What's brewing in the science laboratory? Experiments involving electromagnets, sound, plant and animal adaptions, and a Starlab.
The Starlab is a portable planetarium owned by . It rotates among the schools during the year. Addison uses it to learn about the constellations, such as the Big and Little Dippers.
Last week students studied: electromagnets (5th grade), sound (4th grade), the Star Lab (2nd grade), plant and animal adaptations (3rd grade) and the special needs Pre-K class made ice cream.

This coming week students will study the effects of light on crickets, sound, lenses and prisms, soil attributes, and animal adaptations.
This fall, the Addison Elementary Foundation purchased two turtles and held a turtle naming contest. The winning names are Shelly and Sheldon. The turtles join the hermit crabs in the lab. The lab hopes to acquire a snake next.

"Living creatures are a valuable addition to the lab-not only are they exciting for the kids to come watch them swim, dive and eat, but they're also part of the life science curriculum. Many teachers bring their students in the lab to observe the animals and then write about them in a journal, sketch pictures or use their observations as inspiration for a literature connection," Addison Foundation President Lisa Grier told Northeast Cobb Patch.
The Addison Foundation opened the science lab in April 2010 after two years of fundraising efforts. The Foundation funds a part-time science lab instructor, as well as provides funding to purchase lab materials.
