Sprayberry Students Experience Being Lawyers

Students from Cobb County high schools experienced being lawyers Saturday at the 10th annual Cobb County Regional High School Mock Trial Competition.

Sprayberry High School students joined Mount Paran, The Walker School, Harrison High School, North Cobb Christian School and Walton High School at the Cobb State Court building, where they competed as part of Georgia’s statewide high school mock trial program.

Each school had a defense team and prosecution team that competed.

Students act as prosecutors and defense lawyers, and witnesses. Four real lawyers serve as the judge, jury and evaluators during the mock trials.

The junior prosecutors and defense lawyers are judged on a one to 10 scoring scale by the professional lawyers. Scoring is based on the students’ ability to present their opening statements, examine witnesses and create logical cases.

Every year, cases alternate between fictitious civil and criminal cases. This year's criminal case was based on a real 2008 case in Oconee County.
