Region 5-AAAAA Girls Tournament Begins Tuesday

Etowah High School will host the Region 5-AAAAA girls basketball tournament.

The Region 5-AAAAA girls basketball tournament tips off on Tuesday at Etowah High School with six teams in action.

The early game is a 5 p.m. showdown between Cherokee (11-13, 6-6), the No. 5 seed, and Woodstock (12-12, 7-5), who entered the tournament as the No. 4 seed.

The Lady Wolverines beat Cherokee by two points in a Jan. 24 game but lost to the Lady Warriors by 10 in early February. The winner will advance to play on Friday against the 5-AAAAA No. 1 seed, Etowah, who received a bye in the first round.

The second game on Tuesday begins at 6:30 p.m. and features the No. 3 seed, Walton (14-10, 7-5), facing the No. 6 seed, Wheeler (10-13, 3-9). The Lady Wildcats lost both games against Walton this season; the first by six points in December and the second by seven points in January.

The final game on Tuesday pits Marietta (11-13, 9-3), the No. 2 seed, against (1-23, 0-12), the No. 7 seed, at 8 p.m.

The Lady Trojans did not win a regional game this season, losing to Marietta twice; once in December by 31 points and again in January by 27 points. The winner of this game will face either Walton or Wheeler, whichever is victorious in the preceding game.

Tuesday’s games are not just important for regional pride. The four teams that advance to Friday’s semifinal round will qualify for the state tournament.

Friday’s semifinal round will begin at 4 p.m. with another game to follow at 7.

The championship game will be played on Saturday at 7 p.m.

The entire tournament will be hosted at Etowah High School.
