The Cobb school board named a successor to the retiring Karen Crowder this week.

Susan Hallmark, assistant principal at Still Elementary School in Powder Springs, will start her new duties at the Northeast Cobb school on Dec. 1.

She succeeds Karen Crowder, who announced last month she would be retiring before the end of the year.

Also retiring is Chief Academic Officer Judi Jones, who has spent 38 years as a teacher and administrator in the 107,000-student school system.

She cited benefit changes in the state teacher's retirement system in an interview with The Marietta Daily Journal, which reported that at least 75 long-serving school system employees have been similarly impacted.

Mary Kay Fermanich, Hinojosa's executive secretary, also is leaving on Dec. 1 for similar reasons.

She and Jones were recognized for their service at Wednesday's school board work session.

Assistant superintendent Amy Krause was Acting Chief Academic Officer by the school board on Wednesday.

Krause, who has been in charge of curriculum, instruction and assessment since January and previously served in Cobb from 1994-2010, will begin her new role on Dec. 1.
